Although active duty troops and Guard and Reservists on active duty orders are expected to show-up for work during a shutdown, they will not get paid unless Congress passes a separate piece of legislation to do so. Such a bill was awaiting action from the House and Senate Saturday.

Nope, DACA is the side show. The Republicans could have and still can pass a bill w/o DACA and w//o Democrats. Well technically for the military (and civil servants) to get paid now or retroactively requires the republican controller House, Senate and Presidency to pass legislation to that affect.
