Hello all the experts,
I just put togetther a system using Shuttle AK31 board and AMD 700 MHZ CPU.Everything is fine, the system booted up but when I tried to load the Window 98 SE, everyting is going fine until the COPYING FILES part, the system froze up when 7% of the files is copied.I tried several times and the most I could get is 13%of the files and it froze up.I also tried to load Window XP professional and the same thing happened.I was able to run Window XP professional set up until the COPYING FILES and when I get 11% of the files copied,I lost video on my monitor and the system locked up.I can shut off the computer by holding the power button in for about 30 seconds. I wonder what is going on? I never had this problem before.I've built about 15 systems for friends and I've had many other problems but not this one.Any idea? I am sure some veteran builder out there knows the answer.

i had a problem with an ak31, and i tried the via latency patches http://www.georgebreese.com/net/software/, but nothing seemed to help, but what i ended up doing (after finding out that disabling dma made the problem go away) was to force it into udma33 mode rather than the fastest. not sure how to do this in windows, but try disabling dma to see if those problems go away. I know that i've seen a utility on maxtor's site to change what modes of the hd are seen by the bios.

Last time I saw this problem I had the memory timings to high...? Possibly bad memory also...? Do a memory swap if possible...

G'day havenmaster,

I work as a tech in Australia on Spacewalker Mainboards and many others.

I agree with Bartman39 the first thing to do is change your RAM maybe even brands if using generic RAM(remember to load BIOS defaults aswell).

If the problem is not solved, change your powersupply I recommend ANTEC or Enermax PSU's for the best result.(any 350W/400W for starters).

Then change the Video card(does not have to be special, just working reliably).

I say all this in assuming that you have already tried differant IDE cables and CDROM's.

The absolute last thing I suggest, if all this fails to help you, "flash the BIOS" is case it has some how become currupt.

I hope this helps you. Good luck
