Shuttle SN41G2 Issues

guys,

finally had some spare cash to buy one of these, so far i'm pretty impressed (it's tiny! and light! and easy to put together!), but i'm having a couple of problems:

1) boot time is awful - when it gets to the "detecting ide devices" part it slows to a crawl - takes a minute or more! i tried disabling the slaves on both channels and setting the primary master to manual detect and it didn't change a bit. once it finally does detect the optical drive (which it does, at least, get right!), it just sits for a minute or more on the post screen doing nothing. i can tap like mad on the "del" key to get to the bios setup and it still just sits there. what the hell is it doing? is this expected? it seems completely unacceptable to me, and something i didn't see in any of the many reviews i read.

FIXED!!!

2) once i get past the painful boot time and it finally reads the winXP boot cd it seems to get stuck. i see the message "booting from cd" and then the screen goes blank ... and stays blank! the signal light on my monitor is on so it's getting something, but what it's getting is a blank screen! i've tried both video out ports, doesn't seem to help. any clues here?

FIXED!!!

my config: athlon xp1800+, 2x crucial 256mb pc2100, wd 80gb hd, unformatted; hitachi dvd-rom drive.

Edit
thanks, guys, the hd jumper settings fixed everything ... but now i've got a new problem. winxp pro installed fine and was working like a champ until i connected the shuttle to my tv. tv output worked fine but now i don't get anything on my pc monitor! i thought the chipset is supposed to detect what's connected and configure itself accordingly. what's up with that?!

Did you try another optical drive? Since it's hanging when detecting the DVDROM and you can't boot to cd...

yeah, that's reasonable, except i never had any trouble with this drive in my old box. also, when i pull the cdrom completely it still boots really slow!

That's strange. I had similar problems (slow boot/drive detection, problems reading cds) with an older system that ended up being fixed by replacing the aging DVDROM. I haven't experienced any of those problems with the SN41G2 systems I've built though...I would definitely try booting with a different CDROM and HD.

hmph ... just been reading some posts on ard and sudhian, sounds like a fair number of folks have similar issues, at least as far as not booting goes - havein't found anyone yet who has the slow boot problem. shuttle on-line support is lame - no forum, minimal faq, 48 hour turn-round time for tech-support email. i'm getting soured on this real quick ... hope i don't wind up having to send this sucker back!

You may want to check the jumpers on your drives to see that they are correct. That will often cause those symptoms. Also, reset the CMOS and then go back in and change the CPU settings ONLY; you may have messed up a setting and you can check by going back to default. Good luck! (PS Mine boots fairly quickly.)

good idea - i checked these before installing them but maybe i screwed up. can't wait to get home and try it. my goal is to use this as a multi-media device connected to my home theater, so i'm really psyched about it!

hey, thanks again for the suggestion - it was the jumper on my hard drive. must be labeled wrong 'cause i'd set it to master like the label said, but by switching it to cs (cable select) everything was fine.

sweet little box - i'm using it now. it must be about 1/8th the size of my tower!

Glad to hear you got everything worked out! Don't you just hate jumpers?

actually, what i really hate is incorrectly labeled jumpers!

btw, if anyone is thinking about getting one of these puppies, don't let rumors of loud sound stop you - mine is pretty quiet.
