Silly SLi Question

my excuse my ignorance but i really hope someone can enlighthen me.

here goes..

would there be any single cpu intel lga775, sli capable, motherboard before 2005 if at all?

would an ati pci ex card (x600xt) work in sli mode in an nforce4 sli mobo eg. asus a8n-e sli?

So far SLI is nVidia exclusive in the sense that you need 2 nVidia cards, however any boards that have two 8x PCI-e slots should be able to run SLI. Since it is nVidia's thing, obviously their new chipset is going to have the option to support it as they are going to want to promote the technology to help them secure the performance lead.

I think there is a VIA board coming out for P4 that will have SLI support but I doubt it will be around for christmas.
AFAIK there are no Intel chipset SLI capable boards planned although I think that may change. Nforce for P4 - I doubt it. And I doubt the upcoming ATI P4 chipset will be SLI capable!

ATI x600 PCIe card will work in an Nforce4 board but not in SLI mode as ATi do not support SLI, the cards are not physically capable - ie no SLI bridge connector.

SLI needs two things:

(1) a core chipset offering two wide PCIE links. Intel's 7520 has three 8x links, while VIA and NVidia can have their 16x link split up into two 8x links. So no problem there.

(2) You need the graphics drivers to make two separate GPUs to render into one single framebuffer. That's where the actual effort of SLi lies.
