Simple networking question

Should be an easy one:

I've currently got a gigabite capable NAS and HTPC which are both connected to an older Netgear 54mbps router (doesn't support gigabit LAN) which sets up my wireless network to a laptop and another desktop.

What I want is to be able to have a Gigabit connection between my HTPC and my NAS (for streaming HD movies), the other computers need to have access to the NAS but speed is not as much of an issue.

I know I can get a Gigabit wireless router, but its expensive and I don't really need to upgrade the wireless adapters on my laptop and desktop. I noticed that Netgear has a Gigabit switicher for $27 after rebate at Newegg.

So will this work: Cable modem to my old Wireless Router to Gigabit switch to NAS & HTPC?

Yes, that'll work just fine. My recommendation, try going with an 8 port gigabit switch. Also, netgear's ports are on the front, SMC & Trendnet have ports in the back. Keep this in mind depending on your preference. I prefer ports in the back for home use so I went with an 8 port Trendnet switch.

get the 5 port, it works fine, and if you only have 2 systems, why bother with a bigger switch.

I have the small 5 port netgear between my HTPC and two other systems and it does what I wanted it to do.

Plan for the future, eventually, you'll need the extra ports. But that's just me.

very true when you have old computers you do not want to throw out. You can always put them to use as ****** servers or something.

What I would have done was connect everything to the gigabit switch and have one uplink to the router and that is all. That way you can maintain gigabit speeds on all your equipment.

By the time you need those extra ports you may want a better/faster switch.

I don't think anything better than gigabit lan is gonna come out for years to come... look how long 10/100 lasted ;-)
