Funny video, just saw it on the news! They looped it in slow mo four times while the newscasters talked about it.

Should be on the first link, can't find it on youtube.

edit: forgot the link to the article, here
the kid should be playing in the NBA. that was a fake that would get an offensive foul called on your opponent.

anyways, the kid had been told 100 times not to skateboard there, and typically ignored the warnings. the cop was frustrated, but still shouldn't have laid a hand on him. it looks to me like she was trying to stop him and he flew with some drama for the video camera like he was pushed harder than he was.

what are you, 12? the comments like this are ridiculous. no wonder you don't like police, you want to be able to do whatever you want without taking any responsibilty or suffering any consequences.

Some of the old coots here need to get a different outlook on authority. The cops don't prevent much of anything, they just show up after the crime has been committed.
I can't remember the last time that the cops around here prevented ANYTHING.

Also, skateboarding is not a crime, at least not a moral crime. Just because it's a "law" doesn't make it right. Why doesn't she go do something useful like beat the crap out of some white supremacists, break up a cult or two, or take the license away from that asshole that cut me off doing 80 in a 50 zone today? It's nice seeing that dude go flying down the highway freely, but when I get my little pocket-rocket 5mph over the limit, I get slapped with a 140 dollar fine.

My point is cops have no good judge of character, they're unfairly biased, and don't actually prevent nearly enough REAL CRIME. What a load of crap.

The law was passed because public and private property was being damaged by the skaters. I don't know about you, but I sure as hell don't want my tax dollars to go into building a nice stone wall and other public things only to have it destroyed and/or defaced by skaters grinding their boards on it.

The cop was doing her job. Her job is to enforce the law and stop crimes if they are in progress. The skaters repeatedly defied her order and the law. She was perfectly justified in using physical means to stop them when they would not stop after repeated verbal commands.

The problem isn't that I'm old, the problem is you need to grow up.

Don't like the law? Change it. Until then, her actions were justified.

I'm going to go off the handle for a moment, here, you got me going.

I forgot about taxes. You know what I don't want MY tax dollars being spent on? Murdering/raping Iraqi civilians, building churches (separation my ass), paying the salaries of senators who are too worried about their own reputation and take months to ever get anything done, and paying for pointless lawsuits against music "pirates" so that the lawyers can have their 3 BMWs and mansions.

The reason why I don't really care about "law" is because the very basis that this government is built on is sickening. Good people don't need laws and religion to treat others well.

I'm just sorry that there are so many retards out there that need the constraints to be civil. That includes the retards in uniform.
/rant

IMO - The kid did nothing wrong, and the cop shoved him. Which was my original point. Don't talk to me about what taxes should be spent on, or the NEED for authority, though.

lol, what?????
no sh!t the good people wouldn't need laws and such. its because of the bad people out there that the laws were required. you know, the people who murder, steal, etc.

come on dude, leave your fantasy land and join us in real life.

man, how you people live in your little fantasy worlds is beyond me.

Cheyne Dowds, who owns Fairmont Skate Shops in Mount Pleasant and Charleston, said skaters are an easy target. He's complained to the police about skaters being rousted on several occasions. 'That's my tax money going toward that,' Dowds said.

Yet, in the video, he feigns not knowing about the ordinance?

The punk was out there looking for trouble.

Cheyne Dowds has not decided what to do about the incident, which he calls an assault. He said skaters sometimes pick a spot where they shouldn't be, but he says they are never belligerent and always leave when told.

'If we're skating a spot, and the curb's really good, and someone comes out to complain, that's OK,' Dowds said. 'If we're doing something wrong, we know it, we'll go.'

Right, we just ignore the ordinance we know about until someone comes out to complain. Apparently the rules only apply when you're "assaulted".

so what if htey knew about the ordinance. that still does not justify what the cop did.

Sure it does. You can hear her in the backround before he is stopped. Assault is not touching someone. Assault is a act of physical violence. This is a lovely human skateboarder trying to provoke an officer. In fact you can see both of them try to intimidate her the one gets back up on the step or whatever it is, and the other gets way to close which is why she tell him he is to close. Also at he begining on the video you can see the skateboarder look in the precise direction that the officer came from.
I hope he got a ticket for this.

lol at the people in this thread crying foul... these skaters are nothing but punk-ass little children, who make a daily habit out of trying to see how far they can push the limit at the expense of others. Another reason why this country is falling to sh*t because you want to point a finger at the cop, who didn't even remotely "push" the kid.

I bet he will be nominated for an Oscar next year.

Clearly, you don't get it. Lots of people here think cops should only use ice cream cones and flowers to fight crime.
Fight crime? He was skateboarding for chrissake. Don't cops have better things to do?

The only reason you are alive today and own property is because of the police and the protection they provide.
Amused, I would think you as one of the more individualist posters around here would know that is completely false.

lol nice. Fvcking douchebag punks. Its too bad she'll probably get disciplined for it.

For those of you saying she should be charged with assault, gimme a fvcking break. Those idiots probably eat concrete about 10x a day, so gently falling into a bush isnt exactly gonna hurt.

Nothing pisses me off more than punk highschool kids skateboarding around the streets.. although it is funny to watch them scurry out of the way and flip me off when I dont slow down when I approach them on the street.

Strange how the world has changed. 20 years ago when I was a skater, that cop could have kicked some skatepunk ass straight into the infirmary at the county jail and no one would have cared. Now it's coming full circle. Not sure if I like that. 2 wrongs don't make a right.

Right, because most of these untrained, basement bound geeks here are such models of physical prowess that they can defeat the biggest baddest bad guys out there. We're in a forum of Conan the Barbarians. Sorry, I forgot.

Seriously, though. I am an individualist but I also recognize the importance of a government to protect individual rights. I am not an anarchist.

Without a government you have war lords and thugs. You have rule by criminals. Chaos and gang warfare. Slavery and endless victims. Survival of the fittest. The weak will be killed or enslaved or simply lose any and all rights. Just look the the modern day warlord nations of Africa for a clue.

There is a law against skateboarding with many citizen complaints and both public and private property damage reports.

She WAS doing her job. She was enforcing the law and serving the public.

The kids on the other hand had been repeatedly warned not to skate there. And even then, they continued skating even as the cop was yelling at them.

WTF is the use of making a law if no one will enforce it?

my taxes pay for the concrete he grinds against.

My taxes also pay for the cop who pushed him.

Go cop!

I just can't find myself getting worked up over this. I guess it's just that I think all/most skaters are little social rejects.

The cop shouldn't have done that.

Especially when it's video taped. It did look like the kids were up to no good. I'm sure they knew that cop was there.

he had a pretty goodNOSE manual going til that marine algae with a badge decided to assault him.

And the response "Ohhh, it looks like you just assaulted someone..." makes me think the kids were trying for it.

Damned punks - they should be glad it's not 30 years ago, when they'd have been removed from their skateboards by a billy club. Seriously, kids like that do crap just to see how far they can push it. Skaters EVERYwhere know to look for no boarding signs, and these two seem like the type who were happy just to ignore it and see how long they could get away it with.

Still an act of force, unnecessary.

Perhaps I'm just tired over government being used as giant stick to combat minor nuisances when there are far better uses of scarce resources. Can skateboarders be annoying? Sure they can. Does that mean we need to start a War On Skateboarders? Maybe we should increase penalties. Mandatory minimums of 20 years for skating on public property.

When did you turn into such a bleeding heart? As someone else has already mentioned in this thread, cops don't prevent crime, they just clean up the mess afterward. And all too frequently they screw that up too.

Laws are important, I'm no anarchist. But laws also have be written and enforced while keeping things in perspective. If you consider stopping skateboarders to be on the same level as war lords and slave owners, I guess there's no point in arguing with you.

alright...i'm gonna give the kid a little credit *if* he sticks by his words:

The Charleston police department declined to comment on the incident but released a statement saying, "This is under investigation. Once the investigation is completed we will have a comment for the media."

Dowds isn't injured, and he said he's not planning to press charges against the officer.

"I was fine. I'm not trying to pull a whole suit," he said. "I have no bitterness towards the police officer, it was not her fault."
