We are in the market for a new bed. Wife wants a sleep number bed. I don’t really care. The sleep number bed has dual remotes, massage feature and can bend like a hospital bed. All for about $5000. To me it looks like a cheap air mattress with foam around it. Is there anything to these sleep number beds? Do they work? Do you sleep better? Do they last? They certainly seem expensive, but then again a top of the line Sealy is about $2500 or more. Anyone have one of these and can tell me how they are?

That's the way they always seemed to me...an air mattress surrounded by foam. I don't really get the appeal other than the "adjustable" part.

Go check out the "Dux bed" if you have one of their stores in your area:

$5000 for a sleep number bed? The prices must have gone up a lot.

You only get one of these if you and your partner can't sleep in the same bed together. Otherwise you get something else.

Its a bit better than just an air mattress. Mine is 8 years old, but it was only $1400. It didn't have any fancy massager. I don't know anyone who has been able to keep a conventional air matress that long without a "pop".

What I like about it is that it is as firm as the day I bought it, since it has no coils to gradually degrade. The problem I have with it, is that the pressure of it is affected by temperature so you may dial in your sleep number at 70 on a 68 degree day and find it at 80 when its 78 degrees out.

Funny you bring this up. The wife and I just bought a sleep number bed. This weekend.

We ordered the C2, which is the base model bed. The reason is simple. The technology in the matress is no different across the board. The only thing that changes is the foam. And a foam topper is a LOT cheaper to buy from Amazon than it is from these folks.

Now granted, the massage and the flexing stand are substantial upgrades. We weren't interested in all that. The C2 let's us adjust each side, and with a 4 pound density 4" foam matress pad, we're thinking we'll be all set.

Give us a few weeks and I can tell you for sure.

While Tempurpedic beds can be pretty expensive on the high end, they're so comfortable and the BEST part IMO is they do not transfer (much) motion so you don't feel your spouse getting in or out of bed or moving around.

I had a select comfort and it really is just two air mattresses with foam. The only bed that transfered more motion than the select comfort bed that I've had was a water bed, but it wasn't by much.

I could not stand the damn thing when it was being shared.

Had it from my single days and it never bothered me when I had someone in there with me from time to time but once my now wife moved in and it was every night it became clear I either needed to get a different bed or kill one of us.

We got a tempurpedic which is on the other end of the scale of motion transfer and couldn't be happier.

Word of advice if you look into a tempurpedic though, don't get the top of the top model, it's to damn think of a mattress and as a result you have to by speciality sheets that have extremely deep pockets on them so they sheets will actually fit and stay on. It causes a single fitted sheet to cost around $150 to $300.

I love mine. Had it for 4 years or so, and spent around 3k for it. (Don't need all those trimmings, if you ask me.)

Plus,

It has a 20 year warranty, which easily outlasts any other coil mattress on the market.

Thousands of dollars on a mattress? Not my cup of tea.

Just go to Ikea and buy something that feels comfortable.

A few Radisson hotels in Canada had them a few years back. I slept on one for a whole week and wasn't impressed.

I put a $100 foam topper on a cheap old mattress, and it felt like a brand new bed, way better than anything else I've ever slept on.

The 20-year warranty is basically a scam, if you read the fine print. Only the first two years are covered 100%. After that, it becomes a prorated warranty, which means that the longer you own the bed, the more you will pay to fix it. Even in the first few years of your prorated warranty, they'll still charge you hundreds.
