SLI board with an ATI card

I really want to get a ASUS A8N-SLI (Not the Deluxe) there now down to $150 at ZipZoomFly but I have a ATI X800 do you think I should still get the motherboard???

I'm locking this thread based on Principle!

I guess that depends on why you want the motherboard.... If you are attached to ATI, i'd wait until they release their own SLI stuff, under whatever name they give it. IF you are planning on getting an Nvidea card in the future then it would probably be a great motherboard to get. If you don't ever plan on going with a dual video card rig then I'm not sure what the benefit of getting the SLI board would be over say the Deluxe which as I understand it is the same board only without SLI capabilities.

You cannot run two ATI cards in SLI on an nForce 4 SLI motherboard. You can run one ATI card on an nForce 4 SLI board to my knowledge.

Yes, I would wait until ATI comes out with their own "SLI" variant. Should be soon.

I was thinking on doing the SAME thing.. get and SLi board even though I already got my X800XL, but then down the line maybe take advantage of a deal on 2 nVidia's and run SLi without having to get a new MoBo.. I have no preference on company name, just a preference on FPS and eye candy.

I don?t plan on ever using a NVIDIA card because I'm biased towards ATI and ASUS.


It?s just that I need a new Motherboard (ASUS) and my only other choice is the A8N-E which doesn?t have firewire...Which is something I can?t live with.

I wouldn't be biased towards Asus there are plenty of great companies out there. Check out the Soltek sl-k890-939 I have the agp version its a great board stable as stock with a huge overclock.

Get it. Will work fine. But I agree with dashiki, there is no reason to be bias towards Asus motherboards. The DFI SLI-DR is an awesome board.

If you want to run SLI down the road (to the poster who said they wanted to .. not the original poster) and you already have an X800, you'd be much better off to just wait until ATI comes out with their own version of SLI. That way not only do you get an "SLI" motherboard but you only have to buy one video card instead of two...

Legolas: You really ned to stop triple posting these issues re-open your old ones. You asked a week or so ago about ordering you ati card now you want sli do the research before you buy something.

Why would you get an Nvidia Chipset if your running an ATI Video card. . doesn't ATI have their Own chipset for motherboards? Its like putting Ford parts in a BMW...

Uh... no.

ATI makes their own integrated graphics solution, but the OP isn't using integrated graphics at all.

Nvidia chipsets are just chipsets; they have nothing to do with Nvida vs. ATI graphics boards.

actually ati makes the chipset too.

but the different chipsets afaik arent optimized to only use a gpu from that manufacturer also but who knows what the future will bring.

I know that the chipset has nothing to do with the video card, but it does seem kind of odd to use a video card from NVIDIA's number #1 competitor, ATI. Do you think NVIDIA would likely design their chipsets intentionally so they perform worse with an ATI video card, then with an NVIDIA video card?

Not if they want to keep enthusiast market share - especially since last generation, ATI graphics cards were well ahead of Nvidia ones, so many enthusiasts were using 9800pros.
