slim 120mm fans?

Hi all,

Relatively new to the whole scene, as I just put together a system for the first time.

I got an Antec p180 for my case, and a DFI SLI-DR, and ran into a problem while assembling the system - the rear 120mm fan in the p180 hits the corner of the audio module on the DFI board, and both can't be in place at once while the board is installed. I moved that fan to the front fan slot in the upper chamber, and am now running the system with the rear fan slot empty, the three stock fans in the lower, front and top slots, and no other cooling added.

Can I get a 120mm fan that is slimmer than the usual 25mm? Should I worry about not having a fan in that slot? I've looked around, but it seems the only slim fans available are 80mm.

I'm running an Athlon X2 4200+, and a GeForce 7800 GT OC. Things are relatively cool in there right now, but I haven't had a chance to put the system through much heavy use yet.

Some other folks had that problem early in this thread, sorry I can't remember what the solution was but it is in here. Welcome to the forum.

First post and this self centered bunch doesn't want to say,

Hi and welcome to our madhouse incompletunit(not going to ask what's missing).

They maybe out there but i've never seen a 120mmx15mm fan listed.
I do not have a P-180 but many here do and a solution will be on the way in a day or two.

Have you considered mounting the 120x25 on the outside of the case?

Is there support for this delema at Antec's site? They do have much good info there.

if there are holes for an 80mm or 92 mm fan...you could go that way possibly.....
I do know that Zalman makes a 80mm slim fan....

Good Luck!!

Thats what I would suggest. Can you take a pic OP and post it here? Also...if your temps are to your liking and the noise from the top fan doesn't bother you then I say do without the rear exhaust. Try blocking it off as well (do some experimenting) to see if you can create a better wind-tunnel effect. With it left open, imo, you cannot creat an efficient "tunnel" effect from lower front to upper rear. Another "Welcome to AT incomplete!"

Thanks for the replies and welcome from everyone,

Modding the fan actually seems like the best idea, funny that it didn't occur to me - it would involve cutting down a corner of the casing, which would mean that corner couldn't be screwed in anywhere else, but since I'm not likely to move the fan anywhere else, that should be fine.

Honestly though, I don't notice the noise from it occupying the front slot so much - the CPU cooler and video card seem to be the most audible parts in there. The noise doesn't really bother me now, but I've just set the system up and haven't had a chance to do any graphics work, compiling or gaming on it (the main uses for it), so we'll see what it's like under a heavier load.

Good idea too, about blocking off the unoccupied spaces - based on what people have said in other threads here, I might take the VGA duct out and block its grill off - I find it makes it a pain to keep the cabling organized and clear of the components, and people say it doesn't seem to make much difference.

buy a sound card why not spend some money on audio since you already have the best graphic and a very good cpu. btw, that dfi audio thing wont fit on most of the cases that have a 120mm rear fan. it doesnt fit my coolermaster cavalier and antec p180.
