ALright guys, so I'm finally sick and tired of my 8045, already have a sk7 in my gf's rig, and I like it. but I'm wondering, is the 800 worth another 15 bucks? on overclockers.com, the sk7 came in right after the slk800. SVC has the sk7 for 20 bones and 35 bones for the slk800. I would really like to hear from some of you who has compared the 2.

and this will be for a 1700xp tbred on epox 8k3a+.

They are designed a bit differently and I thought for sure the slk800 would cool at least 3-4 c better. But using the same fan and conditions I could barely get a 1-2 c difference. So, you decide.

I agree, I decided the SLK800 wasn't worth almost twice as much just for a few degrees more of cooling. Happily running my 1700+ at 2ghz now with a SK7

I've gotten the same impression from different people lately...an SK-7 is going to replace my old Taisol, as good as it was.

I've even found little difference between the SKL800, SK7 and the AX7, all preform well .

I purchased the Slk-800 from SVC.com and was actually sent the SLK-900u, which is priced at $55. Since I spent $35 I am not complaining!!

that's cool, but the only reason why I'm getting a new hs is because the alpha uses the mounting holes and I'm sooo sick of it.

I hear ya there!

I used one once and never will again. But then I change heatsinks very often and removing my mobo each time does not appeal to me. Once is more than enough.

For someone that doesn't plan on changing heatsinks any time soon, it's may be ok for them. But still too much hassle for me.

I think you would only see a big difference in temps if you use a high volume fan like a Vantec Tornado.

Is there any fitment problems with a Asus A7N8X board, and the AX-7? I've heard a few reports early on that there were...

For the price it's hard to beat.. It's between the AX-7 and the SK-7 for me..

Review of SLK-800 and others at low to very low fan speeds

The only time the SLK-800 was beaten was when fan speed dropped to only producing 10cfm....at everything higher it beat the competition....sometimes only by 1-2 deg C, but that can still make or break an overclock.

Keep in mind that most of these heatsinks (the SLK-800 tips the scales at 550g) are WAY over the limits of 300g for Intel chips and 180g for AMD (IIRC from the articles I read).

Check this out. SLK800 in my opinion, the rails it uses are so much easier to work with, you don't have to find the old cables if you want to try another fan, just uses the same ones in different holes. Not sure bout the SK7 but I know the 800 is great to work with, I can add a hollowed out 80x25mm fan underneath my 80x38mm tornado so there is less of a dead spot since the fan sits to close to the HS to really open up and give good airflow, screw it, get the 800 , easier flan clips and it cools better.

My Link to the simple steps to add better airflow on the SLK800

i heard that too, something about the distance between the fins.

Aluminum releases heat more readily than copper while copper absorbs heat better than aluminium. So a hybrid design is more suited to low airflow.

But the 4 screws make it so buff! I love how the alpha will absolutely never move, even though your right about how long it takes.

Two words of caution for everyone:
  • The SK-7 and SLK-800's can slide back and forth on their clip, and you want to watch how you install it. Put the heatsink as far away from the raised, solid-plastic end of the CPU socket as the clip will let it go, so it doesn't end up landing its main base section on the plastic end of the socket and not making square core contact. Been there, done that :Q
  • The SK-7 and SLK-800's have that nice wide three-lug clip, but I found out the hard way that there is at least one motherboard where the clip's width endangers some of those tiny surface-mounted resistors and capacitors. My SK-7's clip took a surface-mounted device off my Asus A7V333-RAID at the upper-right corner of the CPU socket. Check your board with a critical eye to see if a clip that runs the full width of the socket is likely to run into those teensy bits.
That said, I like my SK-7 and intend to get another one sometime. Pretty good buy for $20!

I clipped the side opposite the CPU ZIF lever with a pair of metal snips to remove one of the three lugs (I only had 2 on the socket anyway)...otherwise something was in the way.
