I just put together a system that was working fine until recently.

Its a 1.2GHz Athlon
soyo k7vta-b MB
256MB PC133 RAM
WD 60GB HD drive
win98SE
dual boot with win2K.

windows loads and sits there for almost 4 minutes before starting desktop. When i first put it together, from power on to start of windows took only 32 seconds.

other hardware:

HiPix HDTV card
TB Quadzilla
Orange Micro 1394 card
Creative labs 56K modem
Radeon 64MB
Pioneer 10X DVD
HP 8100 writer

Do you have aol installed? I seen it personal slow my mom boot time from fast to absolutely slow(10 minutes). We removed it and all was well. This was under win2k.

If you are on a network sometimes it stalls when trying to setup/resolve/restore connections. Just a thought...

Yeah, no NIC in the machine.

I did a bootlog text file and the only thing that struck me odd in the file was that windows fonts were tring to be loaded but had an error of "load fail" code 016 or something. I checked c:\windows\fonts and all the fonts are there (this was a clean install).

Other than what's been said already, the only thing I can say is "reformat and reinstall" That cures a lot of woes. All you need is one little hiccup or power surge/drop when installing and the whole thing winds up wrong. I know that's not very scientific, but I've seen things like this in my own experiences.

I found the culprit! It's my orange micro IEEE 1394 card. I disabled it in the profiles in win2K and win98SE and now the computer boots normally. I guess I will take out the card since I don't use it very much, any ideas on how to make it work?

goul, if you have a NIC installed make sure you disable DHCP in your network properties, and give it a static IP address of something like 192.168.0.x <-example here use whatever you want. It will hang for over a minute trying to get itself an IP address from your non-existent server (that is if you in fact don't have one on your network )
