slow hard drive format

I had a hard drive that gave me a problem. I tried to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows 2000. Everything seemed fine except that the drive has been formatting for 2 hours and is only half way done. It is only a 30 GB IBM drive (about 2 years old). Is this too long?

Full format takes forever. Quick format is quick

yes that is too long. your harddrive probably has bad sectors and win2k is marking those sectors as bad--thats why it is taking so long. you may have to perform a wipe on the drive (write zeros to harddrive). you can download the IBM utility at their website...

You may also want to run IBM's Utility (assuming they have one) for checking the drive. If they do not have one, go to Maxtor's site. I have used their program, PowerMax, on other drives and had success with it. I agree with "yazz", that is taking too long. Good luck!

Quickformat doesn't check for drive errors. It sounds like there could bery well be some in this case.
