Our internet at work is amazingly slow; slow enough to make any page take a good 6-15 seconds to load at times. I also work keeping the PCs updated here. I have to actually schedule to work late sometimes if I need to fix a PC and I will need to DL to fix the issue. It's so bad IT can tell when one person does something even remotely intensive online (publishing files, scanning server, etc)from the lag amount....... even the VOIP phones cut out from this issue.

I'm sure this is standard elsewhere, but I'm just amazed at how crappy our internet is and how much it affects our productivity. How can you expect me to work if I can't access half of said work?

Sadly, they seem to ignore it. Any other similar horror stories?

sounds like you have a T1 with a shitload of employees streaming pandora or espn.

on the voip side our shore-tel used to cut in and out until i replaced the server and updated the software.

Ours used to be frustratingly slow but then a major application was moved off site and the business is inoperable without it, so they beefed up the line, people started surfing more, they beefed again. Now I have to say it's really quick and has been for a long time.

This is exactly why I think we have said problem. It's just people finding ways around and streaming pandora, then running to It when they cant finish their work in time for deadlines. We kinda warned you guys by blocking it, you know.

You could also have a separate, cheaper DSL or Cable internet connection and redirect all internet traffic through it vrs the connection you're using to connect to some other office. At least that is what it sounds like. That is what we do now and it is much better.

100Mb metro fiber ($1k) with T1 backup ($500). If you have an actual IT department, I can't believe your company can't afford decent WAN circuits.

It's possible your company does have better circuits than you think as they've segmented them based on department needs.

If they're based out in the boonies, metro is not possible, obviously. Maybe it's the only viable, and reliable option out there? T1 is slow for todays standards, but pretty rock solid.

We use riverbed as well.

Our 40 meg pipe used to be more than enough for our school, but we recently opened up youtube so now it's pegged all day long.

I usually exceed 100mbit down at work. I think the last "big" thing I downloaded was some lexmark printer drivers which were 101MB..... Otherwise windows updates download pretty much instantly...

Thanks, forwarded to IT. They have been looking for something more robust than a name blocker.

i run the free version at home on the PC's my kids use. i have gotten ZERO virus' or had to rebuild any of the machines since i installed OPENDNS 3 years ago. plus i can block anything really easy.

Sounds like you need a bigger pipe, one way or the other.

I work in an office that once at a 3mb pipe for Internet serving 300-600 users at any given time. My job, at that time, was constantly interrupted with being the Internet monitor/nanny. We now have a 45mb pipe and a failover 50mb pipe.

Long story short, I don't give a shit about what people are doing on the Internet now.

read those. i'm sure you'll have a good laugh. i know i did.

Me and my colleagues on lunch break had a good laugh when you told me I was wrong earlier, but I guess your version of funny is different than mine.

I do realize they aren't very good but they do provide what they advertised..............my boss is just cheap I think.

We have a 1GB Internet pipe at my work and we have no speed issues. We use WebSense for filtering and we limit video and audio streaming with a qouta.

Not available everywhere.

Where I am, $1200/mo gets you 10mb metroe. Which is still better than T1s, however, it's based on bonded VDSL and so is only available on one of the 5 CO switches in town and is only available to like a mile outside of that switch.

You can get AT&T 10mb fiber for about $1700/mo.

Comcast has some fiber...$1000/mo gets you about 10mb worth of speed, but you'll have to pay them $20k to get it installed.
