I just realzied that my LAN xfers are only coming across at ~1,500KBps maximum... I dont know when this started so Im having a hell of a time trouble shooting.

100MBs both sides, ATA100 Drives (8MB buffer).... Im lost.
Any suggestions?

There seems to be a unit conversion problem here. Are you getting 1500KB or 1500Kb? Are your machines setup for 100MB or 100Mb?

Has anything changed since the speed went down?

Have you tried cycling the switch/hub?

How about a new cable?

well Ive narrowed it down to 1 machine, my server.
I can xfer from my workstation to my XBOX at full speed (3000+ on ATA33) but going from workstation to server its only ~1000.

So now to fiddle with server.
Ugh

Is your server running lots of apps in the background that are utilizing lots of CPU cycles?
Possibly other devices in the server are hogging the PCI bus, which the NIC also shares?

UD is running but that is lowest priority. Same happens when I disable it completely anyways.
Other than that there is almost nothing running, FTP server, jakarta HTTP server, but those are taking like 1% CPU and a few MBs of RAM and all were there when it was xferring fine before.

All the cables are ATA66 too

Just updated the nvidia SW drivers for IDE. Rebooting...

Cant think.. where do I "adjust" the IDE HD speed? to force ATA66/100/133

same crap different day.
Its slow to all 4 HDs in the system too... so that leads to ethernet or HD controller Id guess.

I guess I could plug another NIC in there and try that in lieu of the onboard LAN

looking at the properties of the IDE controller it seems all the HDs are set properly. They are all set to "let BIOS select..." and all are set to their max setting (ATA66, ATA100 etc)

Even did speed tests (million bytes per sec):
Theoretical Limit = 133.3
Burst Speed = 99.7
Sustained Speed = 58.8

I noticed a slowdown on my network, and ran iperf between my machines. I have 2 hubs/switches (one upstairs and one downstairs). I recently "upgraded" them from hubs to Netgear FS618 switches, and somehow the two switches colided and causes badness. I replace one of the switches with a hub, and things are back to more normal.

Ok a little more "update" on this...
each machine can send/recieve on the LAN at full speed to a 3rd machine (actually an XBOX) without any problems... full speed.

however my workstation to server and server to workstaion speed is still stuck at ~1500K... its JUST communication between these 2 machines that seems to be limited.

Most Likely a RWIN and MTU mismatch between these two machines resulting in packet fragmentation and slow down.

Go to Broadbandreports.com and D/L DRTCP. Then make sure the MTU is the same for all machines, either 1492 or 1500.

Then check on the RWIN settings.

I cant believe its MTU as my download speeds from the internet is perfectly fine (350Kbs)... its simply communications BETWEEN these 2 specific machines

Try downloading GuildFTP and seting it up on one comp, then download somthing from the other and see what speed it goes at.

have an FTP on the server (192.168.1.100) and I log in from the workstation and transfer a file. Speed is ~1500K

Not sure if anyone else recommended this, since the thread is getting long. But have you tried connecting both pc's with a crossover cable and seeing how fast they are that way?

Little update here it seems...

As Im downling files from my newsgroup server at 350K to my workstation, I started to FTP transfer some files from my workstation to my server... speed of FTP xfer from workstation to server is 1150K. Sparks my interest... so I kill the usenet download... FTP xfer jumps to 1500K

so that tells me Im stuck at what seems to be half-duplex 10Mbps or damn close.
And it seems that it would point towards the router being the culprit too

Is QoS installed on anything? I had that installed inadvertently on my server and I was wondering why things were so slow.
