Huh, so I did some checking on some numbers and it seems a lot of these images are extremely misleading. C354 Cephei appears to be hundreds of times larger than our own solar system in that image, but in fact if it were to replace the sun it would extend a bit past the orbit of Saturn.

But that's only because the distances of our solar system are misrepresented.

If the sun were the size of a basketball, jupiter would be 25m away.

Yeah it looks like the only thing that is actually wrong with the picture is the size of our solar system, which is around ~2,200 times the diameter of the Sun.

it was saying that those were the planets of the solar system as presented above

It is possible that Betelgeuse has or will become a supernova, [4][26] which will be the brightest ever recorded, outshining the Moon in the night sky.[26] Considering its size and age of 8.5 million years, old for its size class, it may explode within the next thousand years.[26] Since its rotational axis is not toward the Earth and also because of its 430 light year distance,[26] Betelgeuse's supernova will not cause a gamma ray burst in the direction of Earth large enough to damage its ecosystem.

Nobel Laureate Charles Townes announced evidence that 15 consecutive years of stellar contraction has been observed by UC Berkeley's Infrared Spatial Interferometer (ISI) atop Mt. Wilson Observatory in Southern California. Reported on June 9, 2009, the star has shrunk 15% since 1993 with an increasing rate. The average speed at which the radius of the star is shrinking over the last 15 years is approximately 210?219 m/s (470?490 mph).[27]

According to the university, Betelgeuse's radius is about 5.5 A.U.s, and the star's radius has shrunk by a distance equal to half an astronomical unit, or about the orbit of Venus.[28] Some theorists[who?] have speculated that this behavior is expected for a star at the beginning of the gravitational collapse at the end of its life.[citation needed] The mass of Betelgeuse puts it in range to become a neutron star or possibly a black hole.

Can somebody answer, how many times bigger than our sun is the largest known star? How many of our suns would fit inside it? What about earths??

From wikipedia, which is always true

Assuming the upper size limit of 2100 solar radii, light would take more than 8 hours to travel around the star's circumference, compared to 14.5 seconds for the sun. It would take over 7,000,000,000,000,000 (7 quadrillion) Earths to fill the volume of VY Canis Majoris. [14]

Please point me in the direction for a single credible person on Earth who believe that the Big Bang was caused by two molecules colliding. Please get yourself a clue about astronomy before talking shit in astronomy threads, kthxbaidunletthedoorhityourassonthewayout.

however they are valid approximations.

Not likely.

Ahh found it... Directly from a current Astronomy Magazine, from the article, 10 Things We Do Not Know About Massive Stars:

"What is a star's maximum mass?

Up until a decade or so ago, some researchers claimed they had discovered stars with extraordinary masses. For example R136a- the central region of the star-forming Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC)- was thought to be a single star containing 2500 solar masses. However, the illusion has passed. Most of the estimates was done by indirect means. Better observations have shown the apparentlu ultra-massive stars are dense clusters.

Still, determining how much massive stars weigh proves to be difficult. Statistical studies of big clusters have shown that no star with a mass larger than 150 - 200 solar masses exist. The only reliable method involves studying binary-star orbits. An orbit's size and period depend on stellar masses. To date, two binary pairs appear most promising. One of those pairs, the Milky Way's WR 20a caontains two stars that each weigh about 80 solar masses.

However, more massive stars may be out there. For example, the starHD 15558 may contain 152 solar masses - plus or minus 46 solar masses; the star WR 25 may conatin 75 solar masses."

See, even the best guesses have a margin of error of 50%. The information in that slide show is outdated and plain wrong.

Uhhh, Astronomer... that is a valid theory, and one of growing popularity among physicists. It's called M theory or Brane theory. Time and space are relative, so the size of the particles (membranes), is irrelevant, but a hypothesis stating that the Big Bang was possibly brought about by the collision of two membranes has been put forward and is receiving quite a few supporters, mainly because it solves the gravitation problem (why is gravity so weak?).

But seriously, to Citrix, prove it. Science is based on observation, testing, repeatability, and elimination. God is based on (among others) wishful thinking, indoctrination, guilt, and fear.

I happen to be very familiar with M theory/String theory/brane theory (for a layman) and I'm quite aware of the hypothesis. They say NOTHING about colliding molecules leading to the big bang. By the way, particles are not membranes, particles exist ON (or between) membranes as excitation modes of strings.

Good.

I admit misreading the word "molecule" as particle, besides I obviously agree with you on the validity of most of Citrix's opinions, now I just agree more.

Thats cool.

Hope we can determine what physics allow for such a large galaxy in one of those images. Maybe we'll uncover the secrets of the force.

clearly a photoshop. betelgeuse is just a 90 degree counterclockwise rotation of arcturus.

Read the thread, that series of pics is wildly inaccurate on several fronts.

Yeah that is quite nuts how there is SO much out there. Our galaxy is a spec of dust compared to the rest of the universe. Also now I know where our mail server name came from. (Rigel)
