top ranking

It even outranked the Galaxy S series pretty badly.

And the Winner is…
There is no decisive winner as each of the three “Super” displays significantly outperforms the others in more than one important area and significantly underperforms in other areas. The iPhone 4 by far has the brightest and sharpest display and is the most power efficient of the displays. The Motorola Droid by far has the best picture quality and accuracy. The Samsung Galaxy S by far has the lowest screen reflectance and largest Contrast for both bright and dark ambient lighting, and the best viewing angles. On the flip side, the iPhone 4 has a weak color gamut and viewing angles, the Motorola Droid has weak screen reflectance and viewing angles, and the Samsung Galaxy S has lower brightness, excessive color saturation, higher power consumption and some sharpness issues. Each of these “Super” displays is none-the-less impressive and deserves an award: the iPhone 4 performed better overall so it earned the DisplayMate Best Mobile Display Award, the Motorola Droid earned the Best Mobile Picture Quality Award, and the Samsung Galaxy S earned the Best New Mobile Display Technology Award. Each of these displays has lots of room for improvement and can leapfrog the others in their next iteration with appropriate action…

TBH, There really isn't a clear winner in the article, since if it was the absolutely best quality in terms of display/accuracy/quality. Motorola is the best. So no, it doesn't out rank anything badly.

I agree with the article. If you have a Galaxy S phone (at least the Vibrant) there are display "fixes" that improve the display. Once again, great to see competition driving up the quality of smartphones...

I see pcmag shared the same data. I think this is king of funny coming from PC Magazine, who is notoriously biased against the iPhone.

They say "iPhone 4 Display Quality Beats Samsung Galaxy S" when the data shows exactly what this link says = there isn't necessarily a clear winner although I personally prefer the iPhone display

I'm just going by what we've all discussed here prior and people were saying they'd never want an S-AMOLED cus it over saturates but seeing their data the iPhone 4 display under saturates at basically the same amount. Only question I have is with the power usage. I wonder if that's with white backgrounds since we know any type of AMOLED screen uses the most power under lighter colors and the power usage goes down the darker it goes but that really doesn't matter anyways seeing as these devices will mostly be used for browsing the web where most things are white/light colored.

There is a noticeable improvement on my battery life if I use a dark background. I ran a live wallpaper for a day that had some briht stars on it. Killed my battery in half the normal time.

While I live my vibrants screen I will say my droid 1 still impresses. The white is white. When I compare the two I can see a bluish tint in the vibrant on web pages.

I'm also fielding the N900, had the Droid shortly before that and I must say that when I first got the iP4 I wasn't all that blown away.

This must be a joke thread. Or maybe Steven P. Jobs only let the OP come up for breath long enough to read half the article.

The Galaxy S has better black levels, contrast ratio, reflectivity, and screen brightness than the iPhone 4.

And the "number of sub-pixels" column must be a joke. AMOLEDs don't have sub-pixel matrices like LCD displays, but the article concludes the display must be "less sharp" because of this.

So the iPhone 4 is better in some areas, Galaxy S is better in others... but the Galaxy S also has an extra half inch of real estate.

Apple has a really great display in the latest iPhone for sure, but why don't they ever increase the size? 3.5" is low end by today's standards; even the original Droid from a year ago has a 3.7".

Oh and this also makes me wonder why people still talk about AMOLED screens using less battery power... they obviously don't. S-AMOLED looks great but Apple have proven you can make a great looking LCD screen.

What I'd love to see is a phone with a full 720p screen, that would rock.

iphone 4 has a really nice screen but I prefer the Samsung Galaxy-S screens... much more vibrant and deeper blacks.

QFT.

After owning a phone with a Super AMOLED display I could never go back to LCD.

I actually have(or have had) the HD2, Captivate and IP4 and they are all great screens.
Even the HD2 which is considered OLD, has a great looking screen.
Sure the IP4 has great pixel density but it still has a 3.5 screen.
Personlly like browsing on the Samsung the most.

lol. i know the colors are nice just like people enjoy glossy screens which push RGB to make it more pleasing to the eye, but there's something about accurate colors which entices me more.

I remember when 22" monitors came out and were all the rage with their TN crap. I stuck to my 19" PVA. I'm glad I waited for that craze to pass and to get to my 27" S-PVA. Shrug. Some people prefer size, some want colors, some want flat out excellence.

Hope you have an original Droid as that seems to be the only one that's close. Every other display is faaaaaar off it seems.

A Motorola Droid 3 with an LCD that has the resolution + DPI of the iPhone screen at 3.7 inches. I WOULD PRE ORDER the day they made them available. I know my Droid 1's an LCD, I wonder if the X and 2 are too.

I think its all matter of preference. Smartphones today have pretty nice screens. I'm not sure how we were able to tolerate LCD's in the past.

After owning an iPHone4 though, I don't think I can go back to a non retina display. I'd like a 4.3" retina screen.

I did this photoshop render a week or so ago. Its what an iPhone4 would look like with a 4.3" screen. Looks pretty sweet to me.

but then they'd have to up the rez again to have the "retina screen" and then you'd run into the same problem phones like the Evo have

I think the problem with screen resolutions is fragmentation. I think what devs need to do is create all of their apps in super super hi res so that its future proof and then downscale them to whatever screen size.
