Verizon's 4G LTE signal is strong in my NYC Bronx neighborhood, but my apartment is located in the rear of the building adjacent to an alleyway, so the signal in my apartment vacillates between "1X," "3G," and LTE, and never more than 2 bars of strength for these 3 modes.

Verizon wants to sell me a Network Extender for $200 (discounted from $250), which I can't afford.

I solicit your thoughts.

$200-250 sounds about ballpark for the device in question. Even the knock-off brands tend to run about that.

That's just the name of the game, sorry man :/ Might be able to get a used one cheaper off Ebay/Craigslist.

Did Verizon give you a device model that we can look up?

I didn't ask for a model number because I tuned out as soon as Verizon told me that, "$200 is the most that we can discount"

Why do you need the model number?

That doesn't have anything to do with extending a cell phone signal. That allows you to extend an existing wired computer network through the power lines in the home. If you can get a good signal from Verizon on one side of your apartment, then this could be used to get access on the other side of the apartment, but that's all.

Can someone translate this; is he just clobbering me with technobabble:

He's basically telling you to do what Verizon told you to do, only with more detail.

So we can see if the device that Verizon supports on their network is available cheaper somewhere else.

Verizon now tells me that this network extender needs to work in conjunction with high speed internet... after three or four calls to Verizon tech support, this is the first time that I've been told that conjunctive high speed internet access is sine qua non!

I just moved into this apartment, and it may be a few months before I settle down with internet access, so it appears that I must reconcile myself to nil signal strength in my apartment.

I do not think so. There are times that the signal in people private home has similar situation the signal doews get in well.

An extender goes somewhere in the out side and and act as a sort of stationary Cell phone and send the signal into the House.

You are in an apartment a lot of time there are problems to install extender. It needs power and a permission arrangement to be in a spot that does not belong to you (or to your rental agreement).

That is real life, sometime there are circumstances with no apparent or inexpensive/free solutions.

That's how it worked when I had a Sprint one. It put out a cell signal but transmitted through your internet and not the cell network.

That is correct. I believe there are other types of devices that amplify Verizon's signal but the Samsung Network Extender that Verizon sells essentially communicates within your apartment with your cell phone using cellular frequencies (somewhat like a mini cell tower) and the device is hooked to your broadband internet and transmits the call over broadband.

They are variety of these devices some extend the Phone Wireless signal, some translate to standart WIFI and few more iterations.

What to use depends and how One wants to run his specific LAN.

In ant case, it usualy end up with more than one additional device, expense of few hundred $, and sometimes additional monthly fee to the Wireless Cell Phone provider.
