Hobbes wasn't even a pet. He was a stuffed tiger and only 'lived' in Calvin's imagination. He was no more an actual pet than the voices in my head are. The all-time best comic pet was Opus the Penguin, he started off as Binkley's pet before spinning off into being his own person.

Oh sure. Next you'll be trying to tell us that Santa Claus doesn't exist.

When I moved into my freshman dorm at Penn State - this being an ancient 1991 - my door was marked with a Spaceman Spiff comic with my name on the flag. How sentimental...still have it.

Pfft. tHe only people that would say Snoopy or Garfield are either a.) not men, b.) over 35, c.) have no sense of humor, or d.) can't understand the ideas of C&H.

no offense or anything.

Definitely Hobbes! I never was that fond of snoopy, I do however identify with Charley Brown.

Garfield is ok, but as has already been said the fat and lazy jokes have gotten old. So have the geek jokes about his owner.

Going under the assumption of which would be my most likely or the best real life pet:

Cats are suck, which rules out Garfield and, to an extent, Hobbes... but he's a tiger so not really the same.
But... Hobbes is nothing without Calvin and his imagination. Hobbes is a stuffed animal.
Thus, I had to pick Snoopy. And that's what I voted.

But, If Hobbes was real and also not a stuffed animal, then I'd say Hobbes.

If the poll was geared towards which is the funniest or most enjoyable comic strip, then Calvin and Hobbes is a landslide winner followed closely by Farside and Dilbert.

Peanuts and Garfield barely ever got a laugh out of me. I'd say never, but, I have to think I might have laughed once.

w00t! 100th vote.

I said Snoopy, even though I'm a big Calvin and Hobbes fan. I just had to give my props to the original. Schulz did so much for comics, and I always found his strips funny. Watterson would've been nothing without the influence of Peanuts. Snoopy's escapades as the WWI Flying Ace, Hockey player, etc. etc. introduced readers to the idea of an imaginary-world-within-an-imaginary-world, in which the thoughts of one character create a separate reality from the one experienced by the other characters in the strip. The simplified drawings -- often just round heads on a plain white background -- created a world driven mostly by words, not by action. (Although 'funny drawings' involving visual irony or the simply ridiculous always had their place.) Linus's philosophical musings broke new ground at the time and introduced new concepts to our collective vocabulary (come on, who doesn't know the concept behind a security blanket?). All of these elements from Schulz, taken to the next level by Watterson, are what made Calvin and Hobbes so great IMO. Combine that with Watterson's genuine artistic skills and you've got a strip that will last through the ages.

edit: Garfield sucks.

Gotta agree with bizmark here -- "Sparky" Schulz (may he RIP) was the master of his time, and Watterson (and all modern comic artists, really) owe him an enormous debt...

Sometimes I wish Sparky had taken a break in the middle, recharged his batteries, and tried doing something radical in his strip (maybe started a side-strip or a completely new strip altogether). While his minimalistic style made Peanuts very accessible, I think he kind of let his artistic "muscle" atrophy, and by the end was very constrained by the stylistic walls he built around the strip.

Hobbes owns! None of the others can compare. Garfield was quite the lazy guy and I can't even remember what Snoopy did other than sleep on the roof of his house.

Hobbes... but only because Dogbert isn't an option.

"From now on, I will not try to reason with the idiots I encounter. I will dismiss them by waving my paw and saying, 'Bah.'"
"Just because someone thinks differently from you doesn't mean he's an idiot, Dogbert."
(waving paw) "Bah."

"While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'"

"You must use the stars as your management guide."
"Does that work?"
"If you believe it works, then you are not bright enough to make your own decisions anyway. So randomness is probably an improvement."

"Dear Tim, your book does not meet our current publishing needs. You plot was lame and I hated your characters. By association I have come to hate you too. For safety reasons, I have hired an illiterate person to rip up your manuscript."

Scott Adams is pure genious.
