So... am I OCed?

So I just finished piecing together rig in the sig. Used the RoG BIOS's CPU Level Up to set to 4.6. RoG CPU-Z says 4600MHZ but Windows "View CPU and Memory Speed" screen still says 3.3. I know with the X3350 I had before, it would say that it was at 3.2 even when the thing wasn't at load.

Is my OC working or is it not? Is there any way for me to tell?

If you are just using windows too check an OC AFAIK it will always see it the way intel made it (IE it will say it is at stock)

W7 shows the real clock speed of my cpu, so it's probably not that.

Use a program like CPUZ to track your processor information. While at idle it should list it at 1.6ghz. Once you put some load on the cpu (say converting a music file or something), it should throttle up to the turbo speed. You can see it happen in real time using CPUZ.

I generally trust CPU-Z readings. It shows "real-time" clock rate including OC's, SpeedStep, TurboBoost, etc.

I'v never had windows show my true clock speed when OC'd maybe just me though.

This is right after I boot up. In any case, like I said, when I had the X3350, Control Panel -> System and Security -> View amount of RAM and processor speed would say Intel X3350 2.66 GHZ @ 3.2 GHZ whether or not I was idle. This cpu however says Intel i5 2500K 3.3 GHZ @ 3.3 GHZ there.

I think it may just be windows. Or perhaps a windows update that changes the way it reports it. My computer says my 980x is at stock, even though at load it is 155x27=4.2GHz

If you really wanna know, just run a benchmark at stock and another one at OC settings. That will tell you for sure if you're OCed or not since the primary goal of OCing is more performance.

Windows sometimes shows the correct cpu speed. Sometimes it doesnt. Never trust it. SuperPi will tell you how fast you are running!

I've got one more tangible problem now. Ever since I put in the Corsair H60, there's this strange noise that happens when the computer is on. This weird... string of ticking sounds. It's almost like the sound of a wire hitting the fan but there is no such wire. If I pull the side panel off and wait a bit, it stops but if I put the panel back on, I hear it again. The sound is driving me nuts. Any ideas?

Update: So in frustration, I err... "slapped" the back of the Corsair case fan + square boxy chamber of the H60 (in back of the case) and the sound went away. I don't know how long it will stay away but wanted to mention that in case it helped. Is my H60 defective?

Try reinstalling the fans or even switching them around to see if that helps. I think the exposed side of the fan is hitting your radiator. If you loosen the screws it might help too.

I noticed that too, on a recent S775 build. An E5200 (2.5 stock), clocked at 240FSB (3.0Ghz OC), and in the BIOS, it shows the OC. In CPU-Z it shows the OC. But in Windows 7 "System" page, it shows 2.50Ghz as the speed.

While my desktop rigs, which are also S775 2.5Ghz OC to 3.0Ghz, it shows 3.00Ghz.

One of the mysteries of Windows, I guess.

Hmm thanks for the confirmation. CPU-Z actually says "@3.3" as well. But in the bottom left, it will show 4600 mhz (and 1600 mhz when idle.) I guess that's good enough for me.

Ever since I err... slapped the back of my case, the sound hasn't come back, so hoping that is permanent.

It is just reading the default clock (3.3). Windows does that as well.

With my setup, it says Q6700 2667MHz (default) @ 2400MHz, when in reality it is 3300MHz. Probably because I dropped the multiplier back to 9 so it is thinking 9 x 266.

My overclocks all show in windows, maybe you need to rerun the Windows Experience Index. Just a guess though, as others mentioned windows can we weird.
