So how does this work?

Ok guys, I could really use and advice and I'm sure someone here can explain what the issue is that I'm having.

This is my pc: P4 2.4c Ghz (soon to be OCed), ABIT IS7-E, 1GB PC 3200, ATI X800XL 256Mb

So for the last few days I have been testing different games and whatnot on my pc due to just getting the x800xl. In 3DMark05 I get 4500 which I think is about right for my pc.
Anyway, Fear runs like crap on my pc. My fps jump around like crazy, ranging anywhere from 18-70 and about 30ish most the time. And this is with the textures on medium. If I put the textures on max I stay in the 20s most the time. It's really bad especially when I walk into a new room or area...almost like it's loading something.

But shouldn't my video card be able to handle these textures with no problems? These bad stutters are annoying as hell especially with a new video card.
Is there something other than the card bogging it down ya think?

Oh and for comparison I also tested out HL2 last night. It's kinda strange because with aa at 6x and af at 16x it runs smooth as butter. Ranging anywhere from 38fps (very seldom) to 80fps with an average of about 60ish....and this is at the 1200x960 (whatever it is) res. But again when I first walk into a area I'll get a stutter.

What the hell is that?

Thanks for any help.

you do know that the x800xl on agp is 8 pixelpipelines.

not just your card, but many other cards have a hard time running fear.

8? Are you sure about that?

You need more system RAM to stop the stuttering when details are high. Another 512K should make it much better.

FEAR is poorly optimized, as I've last heard. The game devs didn't do their work. From what I heard, even the 7800GTX can't run FEAR well. It's not because the graphics cards aren't powerful enough, nor is becauses the game uses really advanced graphics. It's more like the game/engine was written poorly and uses up more resources than any game like that is supposed to.

FEAR game devs should go back to basic programming class...

Well hell, this is great news!

I was worried that my card had bad ram or something.

Thanks guys.

Some people can't run FEAR with even higher-end graphic card like 7800GT... So It's understandable that you can't run it on the X800XL

No game out there should kill my video card like this IMO. Sure there are better card out there like the 7800gt but still the x800xl is a fairly new card and "should" be able to play any game, at this time, without this many problems.

But yeah I agree with you that if the 7800gt has problems then obviously the x800xl would also.

Still I was thinking "wth? This is supposed to be a good card".

2GB RAM will clear that right up.

I guess that's my next step.

I wouldn't count on it though. F.E.A.R. is the poorest optimized game out there I think, so I dunno if even 2GB of ram will handle it. Oh yeah, and the AGP x800xl IS 16 pipelines.

Can you tell me where I can buy these 512K sticks?

I'm looking at your system and I hope you actually do know your stuff...

Its cute how F.E.A.R devs think they can optimize it for dual-core...they cudnt do single-core and they think they will pull off dual?

I'm looking at your response and wonder if you experienced a breeze from those comments flying right over your head.

512K is not equal to 512MB.

I have the fear closed beta, and an x800xl. I'm not having these fps problems in fear as you say you are. I get anywhere from 17 fps to 450 fps in the f.e.a.r time demo bench mark.

Source on the other hand seems to be recieving many performance hindering updates because i too now have seen a huge drop in fps and stuttering issue with the game. Steamforums have closed and deleted any of the forum posts regaurding this issue, but caleague forums have mass threads on this. There seems to be something going on with one of the last updates they released. I had 300 fps constant with it at 1024 and every thing low textures. Post update i hit 30ish in fire fights and rarely hit 200's now. I've tried 4 recommend drivers from everything from 5.7 and 4.12 omega's which have the most stable fps for counterstrikesource to the ati 5.7 and 5.8's.
If the game stutter causes guns and everything to appear on your screen like you have just bought them or just picked it up, TONS of people are having this issue but valve is ignoring it.

sorry for the long paragraph.
