sounds like good advice you are giving. though i would say 50 percent of my learning has been done outside the classroom, reading books, doing projects and working and this knowledge has been far more useful than what i have learned in classes. I am graduating next December with a BSME degree.

Curious, what's so attractive to you about the location? Penguins? Free cross country skiing? Family?

You don't meet many people that have an undergrad in EE.

Well I guess it's dependent on your network... EE/CS/CE people pretty much all have the same network in my school. EE/CS/CE is the biggest department (yes, it's all combined into 1) in my school. If our department decreases then all the other engineering departments increase in admission. Another thing that hampers EEs in aerospace (at least in my school) is that so many of them are not citizens. If a Caucasian goes into a junior level course, then you'll be in the small minority. Lots of Indians/Koreans/Chinese/Singaporeans etc.

I worked at Lincoln for about 4 years and am now at Raytheon IDS. Honestly, for a first job Lincoln is a great place. Why won't you say where you took a job? I came to Lincoln with a BS in EE and was part of their Lincoln scholars program for my MS. The lab is a great place to ease your way into the working world. It is so focused around the technical work and you get to learn a lot while not having to deal with the process bs you'll find in industry. Technical talks occur daily and the number of conferences held there is astounding. You also have access to a terrific library in Lexington, and can get materials from campus on the shuttle that goes back and forth. They are great at training engineers and sending them out into industry. A large percentage of the people I work with at Raytheon have worked for the lab at one time or another.

I was very impressed with LL. Nice people, chill environment, and great facility. It's not a commercial atmosphere where there's high pressure (except for deadlines) and it seems like a more stable job. Benefits are great too! To me it seemed like a place to retire. What exactly made you switch to Raytheon IDS?

I don't prefer to say where I accepted for a variety of reasons. One of them being getting unsolicited resumes from people I don't know.

It's funny that you say LL is a place to retire, because I've compared it to a retirement home many times. In the group I was in, to be full staff you had to pretty much have a PhD. It's not like this in all of the groups in the lab, but I wasn't being given that much research responsibility because of this. Also, having never worked in industry besides internships I wanted to see what it was like. Try my hand at some of the non-technical roles you won't find at a FFRDC. I was also able to negotiate a significantly higher salary, so it made financial sense to change jobs as well.

I also hear The Aerospace Company is a retirement place as well.

So it sounds like you went into a management role. How was the transition? I hear it can be quite an unpleasant experience if you don't adjust quickly and properly to the management lifestyle.

OP, congrats.

You can PM me the $ those companies offered for someone with Masters degree (don't have to be exact number, in range will be fine).

OP, another request for numbers for job offers so I can get a feel of what a MSEE will get me. I go to an engineering school in Boston/Cambridge.

To clarify, the job hours required for all the companies were generally the same. Some hours were more flexible than others. There was no required overtime, and it was either you work for as long as you need to in order to finish your work, or you work 8 hrs a day.
