As in, people you speak to for years and years in a place just one day are banned without any explanation.

I'm surprised anyone stayed after the easy free Tshirts in hot deals.

I actually got interested in the infamous splintering of OT with the garage and home and garden forums. OT is like a kiddie playground to me. Some of the OT jerks still make it to the garage and H&G, but I like the division.

I couldn't care less about the forum as a whole, since it just seems to be a one-up or insult competition of late, even in the "technical" forums.

I was under the impression that the banned people were told why they were banned. They just never told anyone else.

I do think the bannings (regardless if they were right or wrong) were the biggest reason for the drop in postings. At one point we lost almost all the biggest posters, at least it appeared we lost them really close together. I've also heard tale that a lot of other people left because they didn't want to stay in a place that banned people they felt unjustly. Of the group of people that left, there are some I miss, and others I don't.

Personally, I've been coming here almost every single day for around 17 years or so. I lurked for years before needing to sell a video card causing me to actually sign up. This place is like home, and if it went away I'm honestly not sure what I'd do. I'd have to go outside and try and explain the joys of bulk beef to random strangers...

I've never understood why forum members seem to think mods need to explain why they banned people. When an employer fires somebody for being a lazy ass, they don't send out a company wide email saying the fired the guy for being a lazy ass.

Some of those people who got banned had it coming, IMO. We've still got a few more that need to go as well, again IMO.

Because firstly this isn't a job, it's a community that is entirely built and defined by its membership. When that community is changed without explanation it's impacted in a negative way.

Secondly, I never said they owe us an explanation. It's their site and they can do what they want with it. I'm simply answering the question. When people you've talked to for 10+ years in a community suddenly disappear and you can't even question why, it drives people away. That is a fact, and it is in fact one possible answer to the question that was posed by the OP.

I was searching the archives for something and happened upon a couple-few older discussions from three, four, five years ago. I decided to look through them for shits and giggles, I couldn't believe how many members have been banned. It was like "Rly they were banned? And him? And them, too?" I don't remember half them getting the boot.

I personally post on reddit and 4chan mostly these days.

4chan because the rules are straightforward and pretty lax. I don't have to read some overly long probably outdated sticky about arbitrary childish rules and then get banned for saying "fuck" or whatever. Not saying AT is like that but a lot of traditional forums are.

Reddit because, if I have a question about X or want to know more about it theres usually an entire subreddit dedicated to X, its glorious!

I still come here now and again though, see whats happening
