Money, Board, Quiet, OCing, etc...........

I just ordered a XP-90 for $22 from http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/ I have several 92x25/38 fans to chose from here with a tach wire. This HS needs 48~65cfm to do it's best.

Consider the SI-120, Ultra 90/120 or Arctic Freezer 7. Look at the offerings at http://www.jab-tech.com/ or http://www.svc.com/

We have an ex-stickied HS reviews thread drifting down this page, find it and read some reviews

Be aware that the XP-90 or SI-120 will fit all current chips None of the sinks I noted
are to be considered "throw-away".

Meh! Someone else can talk with you about the fine points of a $10 HS.

Get one with a copper base, particularly for a P4. Shop http://www.ewiz.com/

Link what you find for another opinion.

Ok,
I'm assuming that a $10 HS doesn't work well? I don't mind going up to $20 if that will help moreso.

Hey!! Put the plug in the jug . Why $35 for a dated Zalman when a XP-90 w/o fan
can be had for $22. That makes no sense at all.

Yikes!

Well by the time you factor in a fan it?s just about the same price. The XP-90 is the better deal for sure, but the Zalman will do just as well and is a sinch to install. If you look around you can probably get a better deal on the 7000.

It may not need lapping, when the thick pad is removed, the base should be checked.
Google how to do it.

Here's a heat pipe cooler for 10 bones... Link

It's got a 4200RPM fan, so it'll probably sound like a buzz-saw, but if you're on a budget...

i am not going to overclock however, if I can use this on the c2d then I don't mind spending a little extra. Is it always beneficial to get one with a fan?

If you are not overclocking and quietness counts with you, then I might suggest this Link. I do not know if any current Socket 478 cooler will work with the new Core2 processors. They may be incompatible.

There are tons of HSFs that work on both Socket 478 and 775.

Scythe Ninja is designed for the socket 478 bracket, so no backplate installation required. Install the four clips to four holes in the plastic mounting frame to install. Can also be used for socket LGA775, Socket 754, Socket 939, Socket 940 with included backplate and frame. Air heatsinks don't really cost that much so not much difference in price. But then again, that depends on how frugal you are. Why don't you try fanless or fan undervolted to 5V? It should be able to handle a 2.8Ghz without overclocking. This is only feasible with the Scythe Ninja IMO.

I'd rather not spend any money but if that heatsink will not work I need a heatsink that will work for 478 and core 2 duo (unless I buy a crappy HS!)

You are a time waster :disgust:

You should have stated you were working with a Dell in the opening post of this thread.
I will not post in this thread again...Good bye, you are the weakest link

I love you too, My 8300 mobo just died and I have already upgraded pretty much everything in the case. So now I just bought a retail motherboard and also had to dump the dell case. Essentially, all that is "of dell" is the cpu and the heatsink
That is why I started this thread.

Core 2 Duo appears to be made for LGA775. Here's a page stating it:http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Intel_Pentium_Core_Duo2.html
So Scythe Ninja will work for socket 478 and Core 2 Duo.

I was not aware that the Core2 would be a Socket 775 chip. I figured Intel would change the socket for this new CPU. Seems like AMD changes their socket everytime they revise their CPUs. Thanks for the info Howard.
