I talked to the guys at my local pcclub store and they said that socket 939 is pretty much out of date and that I really should go with a socket am2 (i think that is what the socket is called) is this really true? I am not a power user by any means and am not looking for a super computer, but I want to make sure that I will be able to come across a cpu for it. As the guy from the store said that they are hard to come by unless I went dual core, which I don't really think I need. So should I keep this board or try and sell it for the new socket mobo? Thank you for any help or advice that you guys can give me.

With the AM2 socket you'll be able to upgrade to AMD's quad processors once they come out, with a 939 you will be at a dead end at some time. Unfortunately the AM2 socket boards are lagging a bit (not that much to pick from) on the power user end (this shouldn't be a problem for you as mentioned. Take their advice and go with the new socket.

The last CPUs for a 939 socket will be high end parts ordered before December, 2006. That month is the official stop point for all production of CPUs with that interface. Production has already stopped for the lower end and medium speed CPUs, and the prices were dropped to match Intel's price drops, so supplies in the retail market are already drying up.

What this means, is, if you have any upgrade thoughts at all about whatever you buy now, you should choose the AM2 socket instead.

I have the Asrock 939SLI32-eSATA2 mobo which is a skt 939 but has a slot for an AM2 board that will allow AM2 chips and DDR2. Havent found the upgrade yet, but I have not been looking very hard for it. Could be VAPOR-ware.

why not just keep the old 939 mobo and have yourself a test system

Just upgraded to a Conroe E6400 (see below) and kept my A64 3400+ (S754) with my DFI NF4X Infinity mobo and 7600GS video card. Going to use it to test Vista RC1 and anything else I want to mess with, without messing up my primary rig

I would love to, but the money situation is not of large amounts. So if I went AM2 then I would have to sell the other boards first.

And the money you will make=insignificant. Not many people have an interest in buying used S754 systems!

I still have my DFI Lanparty UT SLI-D with an X2 3800+ @ 2.6Ghz and a 7800GT running 24/7 rosetta@home. Sad way to see that gaming system used, but I have no friends who are into PC gaming to use it.
