So I took the plunge recently and got myself a AMD 2900XT, even though I probably don't have a big enough power supply for it (OCZ 520w), I decided to buy a OCZ 700w just in case. Well the problem comes in that I really want more than 2gb of ram for my system, planning on running Vista for DX10 however its nearly impossible to find my ram and when I do it's expensive as anything. I'm using Patriot PC4000 DDR500 right now a 2gb kit would like to go for 4gb (another dual channel set probably), just having trouble locating one. I almost think it might be better to just upgrade to AM2 and forget about it. Just pricing the upgrade for 4gb of DDR2 came to around $450 dollars. Is it worth that much to upgrade my rig?

Actually let me tell you what I'm running. I've got the 1.8ghz Opteron processor running at 2.5ghz, 2gb ram like I said earlier, Sata2 hd's in raid, crappy video card but it will be that 2900xt in a few days, Asus a8n-e board, 22" WS monitor 1680x1050. I just want to run DX10 and I know my ram will be the bottleneck in Vista. I had also thought about going for Intel Core2 or Quad core, I run them at work and love them, but it's going to be more expensive then going AM2. Any suggestions here? I just really want to play some of the new games and my system was crawling on that Unreal Tournament 3 demo.

Currently there's nothing worth upgraded to AM2 for an overclocked 939 rig, if you are going to have to pay for new ram and a new motherboard, an overclocked 6000+ X2 is hardly worth it in this day and age. Either go Intel or wait for desktop Phenom.

2GB of ram is plenty for Vista gaming, and should be for most future titles. The only thing I can say otherwise would be Oblivion with a super high res texture pack. Thats the only thing that has sent my pagefile over 2GB, and only after fixing the oblivion.exe to address more ram, and not black out textures in conservation.

I have to agree. There is no point buying a new motherboard/processer/ram at this point with AMD. If you want to do this now, intel is the way to go. However, much like my situation, there is no real rush to upgrade. I am going to hold off until the end of next year and see what the situation is like. I am hopeful that AMD will have a competitive chip by that time.

Have to agree. I'm waiting to see how Phenom pans out myself...getting very, very tired of waiting...heh.

One more note. If Unreal 3 is running slow on your computer, it is your video card. The new card should fix that easy. U3 runs fine on my computer and it is clocked lower than what you are running at. GPU is a greater bottle neck that Processer at that speed regardless of what system you have AMD or Intel

I'm currently on a single core Socket 939 Opteron 148. I figure that if I upgrade, it's going to be to a Socket 939 dual core. By the time I finally upgrade to a new mobo, I'll probably skipped the quad core generation and will be building a new octacore rig.

I've just ordered a couple of Athlon64 X2 4400's (S939) to tide me over until I upgrade the whole lot...which will probably not be until late 2008/early 2009... Couldn't justify buying all new RAM etc. when I've got 2GB of Crucial Ballistix DDR400 RAM in the machine now...

I'd suggest a cheapo upgrade now and see how long you can wait...
