Hi,

I just put a P67 system together with:
Core i7-2600K
Asus P8P67 PRO
Patriot Sector 5 1333MHz 8GB (2x4GB)
2x Gigabyte Radeon HD 6850
OCZ Vertex II 60GB
Corsair AX750

When I try to start the computer it fails to POST, and the CPU_LED indicator is red. After about 5 seconds, the computer turns off and turns back on (no power down this time).

Things I've tried:

  • Ensured there were only the 9 standoffs for ATX boards screwed in
  • Tried booting with only 1 RAM module, in different slots too
  • Plugged in speaker--no beeps
  • Reseating CPU
  • Plugging in another PSU's 8-pin 12V and 24-pin ATX, still shows CPU_LED
  • Booting with one video card
  • MemOK! auto config
I have limited parts so I couldn't really do too much. Like, I'd try the CPU and motherboard individually if I had another P67 setup. I'm starting to think that it may be a hardware failure but I want to see what else I can try first. Can anyone suggest/help? Thanks

EDIT: It turns out it was just a faulty motherboard. Had it replaced and it worked out for me.

Try the "build & boot technique with the motherboard out of the case and sitting on a piece of cardboard so it can't ground to anything.

CPU and HSF, ONE stick of RAM in whatever slot your manual says to use for a single stick, (usually A! or B1) and your video card. NO HDD, NO ODD's.

If that works, add your boot drive and try again.

What wattages are the PSU's tried? I see you tried the Corsair 750...what about the other?

Did you inspect the socket to be sure there weren't any bent pins? (you really need a magnifying glass to inspect the socket carefully)

From ASUS:

http://support.asus.com/troubleshooting/troubleshooting.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

No POST

1 the power LED is on

1.1 Make sure all cables are connected well

1.2 Please clear CMOS to have a try(refer to motherboard manual for details)

1.3 Keep the necessary components ( a CPU, a memory, a graphic card )on board to test

1.4 If there is still blank screen, please connect the connector of speaker to check if there is any beeps

1.4.1 If there is no beep, please contact your retailer for a check

1.4.2 If there is beep, please try to judge from the beep code as the following steps, if the problem still remains after the troubleshooting, please contact your retailer for a check.

1.4.2.1 Memory issue: Beep (1 long 2 short)

A Clean the Golden Finger of memory

B Clean the memory slots

C Leave only one memory stick to test

D If convenient, please change different memory to test again

1.4.2.2 Graphics card issue: Beep (1 long 3 short)

A. Clean the Golden Finger of graphics card

B. Clean the graphics card slots

C. Try to test the onboard graphics card if there is onboard VGA integrated

D. If convenience, please change different graphic cards to test again

1.4.2.3 CPU issue: Beep (5 short)

A. Check whether the CPU is in our CPU support list

B. Check whether there are any damagers of your CPU or CPU socket.

C. .Check whether the CPU fan is correctly connected

D. Check whether the ATX_12V power cable is connected well

E. If possible try to test with another CPU

1.5 If the PC could POST after the troubleshooting as the steps 1.3, please plug components back one by one to find out which one may cause this problem

2 the power LED is off

2.1 Make sure the power cable which connects to the front panel is well

2.2 Please swap a power supply for a try if possible.

2.3 If the problem still remains, please contact your retailer for a check.

I did some digging around on the ASUS forums and got the following information:

"The fact that the CPU LED stays on indicates that the BIOS can not initialize the processor. You might go through the CLRTC procedure and see if that makes any difference. It is described in the 'Jumper' section of your manual.

There may be some problem with the installation of the processor... or some issue with the ATX12V power supply connection or power.

'd say that at this point, and assuming you have a case speaker connected to the system panel connector, you want to startup with no memory to create an error point.. Then start the system and see if it gives a POST error beep code pattern. If it doesn't, then the processor is not running. The EATX12V power supply connection powers the processor so it that connection is not made.. or if that power bus is faulty.. then the processor will not run.

But if all that checks out, then probably time to consider returning the board."

Hope that helps.

If not...

I tried with just one video card (tried each individually), and just one RAM module (each individually as well) outside the case with nothing else attached. However, it still does not POST. And, the pins on the socket are in good shape.

The other PSU was 500W.

Still no fix ;(

Thanks BoomerD for trying.
I ended up just taking my whole system back to where I bought it and they ran the components on a testbed. Bad motherboard they concluded.

OK. Probably the easiest solution of all.

Did they replace it and test the replacement board?
