I was in college and I had just woken up. I found out the Twin Towers were destroyed. I was like whoa. I went outside and people were throwing frissbee's like nothing had happened.

I am reminded of this cause of the lighthearted way people are making fun of North Korea's nuclear weapons.

I wonder how many cities it will take to be destroyed before people stop acting like nothing happened.

(ps I still think Bush was somehow if not fully responsible, at least partly. This isn't about me saying who's at fault though. It's about people's indifference.)

People don't like to worry about things unless it directly affects them. NK doing whatever, especially when their long-range test failed, doesn't hit very high on most peoples care meter.

i disagree. i think a lot of people care and are frankly quite concerned about North Korea's progressing nuclear capabilities and blatant disregard for the outside world's demands.

Unfortunately, if we worried about everything that could possibly hurt us in the future, I doubt we would have a moments rest.

I don't know where the hell you live, but I hope NK nukes them first. Here in TX (I was at UNT at the time) it was like everybody's mom had just died, people walking around speechless.

Nuke's who first?

I live in Williamsburg VA. At the time I was going to school in southwest Virginia.

When I first heard about it I was in the rec center at LSU. They were playing the news over the PA system. At first I was ignoring it, thinking about my next test, how high I was going to go on my bench, whatever. After what was being reported finally sank in I was just sitting dumbfounded at the edge of the indoor track, totally not feeling like working out anymore. There were still people running around listening to walkman's and others to my left doing crunches on mats. I just got up and left.

I'm no republican but the whole Bush being responsible deal doesn't make sense to me. Negligence is the best argument there is in that area, but actual blame is something I just don't see.

When the twin towers were hit, I was on my way to work. I didn't listen to the radio, only my CD player. I walked in just a few minutes before the second tower was hit, and was singing and joking the entire time. Once I found out what was happening, it was different. It takes time for news to get around. Now everyone is watching CNN or reading web forums 24/7.

Go out on the street and ask 10 random people to point out where north korea is, i bet less than 50% will get it right.

Yes, just look at all the progress that has been made on global warming.

I didn't know what the WTC was, it was my first week in the US (from Canada). I just remember the sight of the border (I went back) at about 3pm. It was completely dead.

Also, I don't worry too much about NK getting missiles or a lot of other world issues, I let the elected officials lose sleep over it. Its when they sleep on the job that I get pissed.

not sure what that has to do with my post, but you can give it a go and see if your theory is correct and then report back to us.

the only people who care are people who make threads about it on internet forums and those who respond to it, and a couple other people. but seriously, this is something that the media will focus on for a week and as soon as they stop the majority of people in this country will forget about it.

Well it's not to we're going to need civilians to shoot at NK. Being aware of which direction the attack will come from might come in handy if I'm trying to decide which side of a building to hide behind, but it has nothing to do with my concept of a potential aggressor on an international scale.

Average Joe won't worry about it constantly(what's the point in that?), but they won't forget about it. I don't think that there's a good reason to spend your time worrying about something that you can't immediately act upon. Just store it away and if the opportunity arises then do what you think is right, otherwise take your place in the population and make sure that those who can act are able to.

Those in a position to do something about it WILL wory about it constantly, because there is a good reason for them to do so.

I was in high school at the time. I'll never forget the teachers who wouldn't let us watch the coverage on TV cause whatever they had planned for that 45 minute period was more important...

I was in middle school (8th grade at the time). The first two periods we were discussing the event and watching it unravel on TV. Sometime during second period the dumbass principals made everyone turn off the TVs. That's the wussification of America at its finest. We ended up talking about it in most classes, but it still pissed and pisses me off that the principals made us turn it off. I remember in geography the year after, all we did when the Iraq war started, was watdch the news.

txrandom, i can kind of relate to you on your story...

i was also in middle school (7th grade!), and my first period was algebra 1 (yes, i was in the advanced math class). my teacher told us to work on a worksheet to keep us busy. all of a sudden, our teacher just got up and ran out the door. the next thing we hear, is the PA intercom saying "all teachers report to the office immediately". we were all like whats going on and such. then my teacher came back after a few minutes, and turned on the tv. he thought that people were using the towers to make a movie or something. he said to us that it was no movie, it was real and our country was under attack. all the girls started screaming and crying and the boys started tearing up. then we slowly talked about it for the next 2-3 hours.

later that week, i was sent to the principals office, along with all the other indian, muslim, and middle eastern kids all over our school and we were told that if ANYONE makes comments/racist remarks or anything related to 9/11 or just plain offensive, you just go straight to him and he will take care of it.

but its still scary after almost 5 years of it happening. i still cant believe those idiots would do such a thing to those buildings and our precious country.

God Bless America.

When I first heard about it I was in school. I was looking up some screenshots for the upcoming 3DMark and the goddamn announcement came on. They made us all leave the computers and go watch some goddamned tower I've never heard of located god knows where and smoking for god knows what reason. I want my computer back I thought!

And this wasn't even in the USA! America, you owe me at least one hour of my life. You and your smoking towers, build them a little sturdier next time.
