Hi......i've been trying to download some audio files via KAZAA.......but it seems that every track i download goes all weird (squeling noise) after 10 or so seconds.......

Is there something wrong with my computer or have they put something in the program to prevent people sharing mp3 files????

It just means that the RIAA has started tracking your downloads -- their monitoring software messes up the downloads kind of like how a phone tap adds clicks.

The tricky part is deciding whether or not to format your hard drive to erase the evidence. Odds are very good that you won't end up in the next batch of lawsuits, but remember than even a 12-year-old girl had to pay $2,000 to settle.

I'm pretty sure the RIAA is flooding the network with fake mp3 files that sound okay for like 20 seconds, and then start making horrible sounds. It's a tactic to decrease piracy. I'm sorry, but the music industry is going to be in for some major hard times in the coming years and they deserve it. Price fixing, lawsuits, recycled music, Clear Channel consolidation, MTV (god I hate MTV) and the whole inability to embrace the internet. They deserve all the pain that's coming to them. $18 a CD... yeah right.

You're in violation of the law. Fines can be as high as $150,000 US per song. That's $226,130.15 AUD per song.

Have fun.

Skylynx, whilst what others have said are partly true, i.e. the RIAA is flooding Kazaa with fakes don't worry too much about the lawsuit threats, especially considering you're in AUS. Take a look any any IT related news site (Slashdot, Inquirer, The Register) for storying relating to this, one is posted more or less everyday.

FWIW, I would also suggest that you dump Kazaa and use a better alternative for your evaluation needs...

Saying that, it never hurts to keep a good stock of vasaline just in case

Give the guy a break...not everyone is up on whats happening in the US. The lawsuits by the RIAA ain't exactly big news over here either.

Just try and download a less popular version of the song, I did this and the second try was fine. Only ever had 1 song which was messed up like that.

How can you go online and not hit a site that hasn't mentioned it? Whether it's popular culture and news like Salon and CNN, or tech and gaming sites like Anandtech, Firing Squad, etc.
