I haven't had any problems just drinking water. Today I biked around for a couple hours and played tennis for about an hour, I sweated buckets, my shirt was completely drenched. Yeah, I'm way out of shape. Still, I just needed a bit of water and I was fine. I doubt anyone needs gatorade, even if you're a serious athlete you can probably do better than gatorade. Anyone else really doesn't need it.

All the sugar water drinks and their diet variants have something bad in them if you look closely enough. If you truly are worried about the health aspect you wouldn't be touching any of that crap anyway. Otherwise the same rule of thumb about moderation should apply! Don't drink 12 of them every day and it's fine!

If I've been sweating for a couple hours I need to get some calories back in me but don't necessarily want to eat. Gatorade (and others like it) sit easy and keep me upright. Water only does so much. After a while you need more than basic hydration. And yes, I'm quite in shape.

Yep, gotta replace the electrolytes which are lost.

So you drink Gatorade? Stick to something more natural and better for the body like coconut water. If you're goal is to be healthier... which is not mutually exclusive with being in shape.

LOL. I would love to see a construction worker pull a carton of coconut water out of his cooler and stick a straw in it and watch his coworkers reactions. Same with a professional football player. I'm not saying that it's worse than Gatorade or a similar sports drink, but these things aren't the demon water that some people make them out to be.

If you are working your ass off (sports, construction, landscaping, ect) you are losing water, salts, and burning calories. You need to replace that. Please let me know if there is a large cancer or diabetic increase in basketball players from the excess Gatorade they consume.

There are certainly other ways to replace those, but sports drinks are a convenient, relatively inexpensive, easy to find way to do it.

I like how everyone is saying "switch to water" ummm, some people actually like a variety of stuff to drink. Who says "lets go out for a desani" or "lets go watch the hockey game and eat chips and water". There are many things that are bad for us, in fact most things we eat are. Even the stuff you buy that is normally suppose to be good for you, is not, because it's been processed in some way that makes it not good for us. Chicken is good for us, why is a chicken burger not good for us then? Because the chicken you buy is processed, has tons of salt added to it etc.

Out of all the stuff we eat that's bad for us, it's not a couple pops that will kill you. Everything in moderation.

we have to distinguish 3 situations:
1. drink during meals
2. drink in social situations
3. drink because you're thirsty while you're at work/in class

1. wine, beer, or water, soft drinks okay too in certain cases
2. anything you want, it must entertain your tongue
3. here's where people should switch to tap water.

Fat people drink soft drinks during 3. I've never seen non-fat people doing that, in my class everyone has his bottle of water.

I worked in a warehouse during the summer a few years back and Gatorade definitely saved me a few times. Some people can definitely benefit from it. Sure majority of people won't benefit from it but who cares, they'll drink whatever they want.

You're missing the point. He was drinking soda before. Whether you "need" it or not, its still a positive step. Gatorade is half the calories of Coke - and all of that coming from sugar. Is drinking water still better? Sure. Is the HFCS reasoning worthy? Sure. However, that is all irrelevant to the fact that Gatorade is better for you than Coke, by a significant margin.

There is no point.

There is no need to drink sports drinks unless you're exercising for an extremely long duration.

Thanks gang for the interesting comments. BTW kid isn't a moron, but he is autistic. He lives in an alternate universe. It's my job to somehow get him through real life on his own. I'm pleased that he made a decision about drinking soda.
Hey Nanette sorry I called your autistic son a moron. Didn't know any better.

Liquid sugar, on top of which the carbonation fucks up your metabolism and makes fat burning more difficult.

In reality, it doesn't even take sugar. Just the taste of 'sweet' can screw up things. Hence why a lot of diet drinks are just as bad as the ones with real sugars.

It's not entirely due to the sweet taste, but the way the body recognizes the sweetness. Sugar and some artificial sweeteners cause a certain neural-stimulus reaction in the gut that likely starts with the initial taste response. But stevia (and most sugar alcohols iirc), while initially resulting in the "sweet" taste response, do not result in the gut sending the same signals as described previously.

It's a well known fact that successful people drink extremely high quantities of Diet Coke, at least that seems to be the trend I've seen. Also, I freaking love Diet Coke.

Head fry guy = successful??!?

Water or Milk

Everything else.......loads of sugar or crap you don't want in your body.

Gatorade is no exception.
