Skim milk blows

Yes, regular skim milk blows. Braum's skim milk does not. This is the preferred milk in my household thanks to lactose intolerance. All other skim milk tastes like water compared to Braum's.

Braum's Skim Milk is fat free and has 50% more protein, calcium, niacin, riboflavin and other essential nutrients than regular skim milk! So not only does it taste better, it's actually better for you! (And it's 100% natural!) It takes 3 gallons of regular skim milk to make 2 gallons of Braum's Fat Free Skim Milk.

my son just returned from getting shaving cream and announced that he's giving up soda.

he's going to start drinking gatorade instead. his reasoning is that gatorade doesn't have HFCS. He's 22, has 3 jobs, so I won't argue too much.

Is gatorade any worse for him than soda?

Gatorade has a lot of sugar too...if he must drink it, it should only be after exercise and better yet the G2 variety.

Coke has roughly 11.67 calories / ounce. Gatorade has 6.25. The Gatorade with aspartame is about 2.5.

I dunno if you can compare the two oz to oz since you can easily drink a lot more gatorade than you can soda.

Anybody that needs 3 jobs has a history of poor decision making. No surprise that this was one of them.

Good luck

You guys are mean.

OP, does this mean he is giving up caffeine? I remember giving up caffeine but craving sugar so I switch to caffeine free mountain dew and then eventually went to water. But at first there was no way i could go straight to water, my body wanted the sugars real bad.

The most important reason to give up soda is the acid. Soda will eat away at your teeth.

Lemon (freshly squeezed, if possible) or any other unadulterated fruit juice, 1/4 tsp. baking soda, stevia or xylitol (sweetened to taste,) water (filtered if possible,) is many times healthier than Gatorade or any electrolyte drink.

gatorade is better than soda, but still sucks... especially if he isn't exercising.

but, yeah, in the heirarchy of bad thirst quenchers, soda is by far the worst.

what's wrong with water?

The most important reason to give up soda is the acid. Soda will eat away at your teeth.

And it will slowly eat away at your kidney's nephrons and your pancreas.

Some sodas have a pH as low as 2.5, especially those sodas with higher concentrations of phosphoric acid and sugar. The fact that it would take 30+ 8 oz. glasses of water to neutralize one 8 oz. glass of soda really gives some perspective.

Soda in moderation is not nearly as bad as drinking it in excess, such as the avg American does.

Considering that water has almost no buffering ability, no, it really doesn't give any perspective.

If your immune system has problems dealing with regular milk, you should probably be living in a bubble.

The average municipal tap water is buffered to 7-7.5pH. Obviously add some baking soda, or anything of a higher pH, and it would take far less to buffer soda.

If your immune system has problems dealing with regular milk, you should probably be living in a bubble.

I don't think you understand what "puss" means in this context. You tube it.

Sugar water is sugar water. This idea that 100 calories of regular sugar is significantly better for you than 100 calories of HFCS is ridiculous.

Things to be concerned with in relative order of importance.
  1. Preservatives; such as sodium benzoate.
  2. Artificial sweeteners; such as Splenda (sucralose), Sweet'N Low (saccharin), Equal and NutraSweet (aspartame), acesulfame, neotame, and even Stevia.
  3. Food coloring.
  4. MSG.
  5. High levels of sugar; such as HFCS.
  6. Salt content combined with level of exertion.

Preservatives, MSG, artificial sweeteners, and food coloring all have the possibility of causing cancer over time.

Google.com - food preservatives cancer
Google.com - artificial sweeteners
Google.com - msg cancer (not proven)
Google.com - food coloring cancer

Artificial sweeteners also have the potential of causing weight gain.
Google - artificial sweeteners causing weight gain

Consuming high levels of sugar habitually before a meal or combined with long term poor nutrition may cause diabetes. So long as a person eats healthy and consumes the sugar after the food (like desert), a physically active person will be fine. Slip in any of these factors over the long term introduces the possibility of developing diabetes: sugar consumption before eating a good meal, proper nutrition, or (inclusive) physical activity.

Edit:
Personally, I drink neither soda nor gatorade, and stick mainly to tea, milk, water, and juice. Maybe once or twice a year I will drink soda. I have found that a proper diet removes the need for the extra sugar found in soda. Also, I do not consume anything with preservatives, artificial sweeteners, or artificial food coloring. IMO, soda is better than gatorade.

However, we go through cycles in life. For a few years we may prefer soda. Then our tastes change and we drink gatorade. Then we later decide to go pure with tea and water. This is life. I drank mostly soda through my childhood and stopped drinking soda around 22 like your son when I also stopped eating fast food. It is possible consuming in these cycles may prove no danger for short periods of time (let's say < 10 years) relative to the length of our life.

Problem is that you usually drink much more Gatorade than soda. A can of soda is 12 oz but a gatorade bottle is usally 20-32 oz.

Pepsi Cola and Coca-Cola Classic have 41g of sugar per 12 oz., Mountain Dew has 46g of sugar per 12 oz., Gatorade G Orange has 22g of sugar per 12 oz. of beverage and Red Bull has 40g of sugar. It is common for other soft drinks and juices to have over 40g of sugar per 12-oz. serving.
