No one is going to buy a $400 walkman when it can't even play the formats they want. This thing will be DOA.

I would imagine this has something to do with Sony having a huge recording sector in the US so it makes sense they would try and eschew MP3's. It could also have to do with MP3 licensing from Thomsom/Franhofer. I agree this Walkman line will be DOA. After they find that their players come off the shelves at nowhere near the rate of iPods do, they will probably change their minds... or just lower prices until they hit a certain point where they rethink their position on MP3's.

Screw Sony and their greedy asses! They want to tell people what they want instead of people telling THEM what they want. No one wants some bullsh!t Sony format! MP3s are what most people have and that's what they want to use. Unless Sony's format is lossless and is the size of an MP3 file, this player will be a miserable failure. Not to mention I think the iPod looks WAY better.

Edit: N/M. It does support MP3s, but that's because it converts them to ATRAC 3

they've not learned the lesson for too long. come on from the earliest day of mp3 players they came out with good hardware, but always with this fatal flaw. attrac, paranoid copy protection etc... it was almost understandable back then with the mp3 players being oh so controversial, but now with ipods and sh*t? f*ck sony.

Greedy bastards, too much conflict of interest. Too bad they are also in the music business otherwise they might have made an mp3 compatible player.

Sony's recording studio arm is obviously calling the shots with their digital audio players. As many times as they've tried to screw people with their horrible DRM, I hope they continue to fall flat on their collective faces with these things.

IMO it would be in Sony's best interests to make their recording and hardware sectors completely seperate companies/entities. Just let them do whatever they want. Sony could destroy the iPod if they would only allow people to play MP3s on their hardware.

Oddly enough, one of their newer HD players actually DOES play MP3s.

Perfect example of Japanese consensus decision making in action.

Better to support MP3, WMA and a couple more formats than push your own and not sell any units. Cost justification for the licenses is pretty simple. I think they are under the impression that form factor is the biggest deciding factor in DAPs.

Who wants to convert a lossy format into another and lose audio quality?

It is a sexy little thing. Does need a user replaceable battery though regardless how long battery life is.

wtf? Most high end Sony cameras? Only one and that is the F828.

I prefer the Sony to my iPod. I sold my 2nd gen iPod as I couldn't live with the size and the remote was sh!t. I now have a 3rd gen iPod bu the remote is still crap.

I'd gladly pay more to have the remote. To me it is worth it. But I'll have to see how the conversion thing works. The iPod remote REALLY is lacking. Smaller form factor would help ala size of my MD would be nice But with 20Gb it ain't going to be any smaller though.

I love my MD's. The remote is classicaly and I really like it. So useful and simple to use. Battery life is stunning.

I'll see how this works and I may end up with one.

Wow...you prefer MD over iPod. Amazing. I went from MD to iPod and there is no going back for me. Granted, there are some nice things about the MD player; mainly the incredible battery life.

To complain about a remote is silly IMO. I know alot of people like them, but I find them useless on such small devices. They add to the length of the headphone cord and just end up tangled and in the way in my experience. They're generally too small to be useful, and usually don't have a display that's in any way useful.

You seem to think that the MD players are smaller than the iPods; again, I'm not convinced of this. The iPod is longer, yes, but it is also narrower and thinner. If you calculate the volume of the two, I'm fairly certain the iPod would be smaller overall.

The iPod is "simpler to use" than the MD player I owned as well.

The thing that kills it for Sony is ATRAC. I don't know why they're so hell-bent on this issue. The must be losing millions on lost hardware sales because of it.

Me too

y0u can have you mp3 and ipod crap . . .

i'll take MiniDisc anytime.

You don't know what you're missing. The entire REST of the world considers ATRAC and MD a pretty good alternative.

But who cares?

it's ALL personal preference
