<< Not bad! Does this version have digital out? >>

The picture on the page has 5 holes, I believe the top one is the digital output. This is not the Sound Blaster Live!.. It's the SB Live! Value.

Their homepage lists Sound Blaster Live Value at $42. When you click on it it takes you to a $25 page. Looks like another 'non-responsible-for-typo' merchant here.

Just how much difference does a good soundcard make? I used a SoundBlaster 16 ISA for 11 years (I believe I paid over $160) with my old computer, and when I got my new one, I upgraded to a SoundBlaster 16 PCI (I wanted to keep using the ISA, but the new motherboard didn't come with ISA slots) I have decent speakers (Altec Lansing AC46 I think) and I think the quality of sound from my SB16PCI sounds ok. So do the more expensive soundcards actually sound much much much better???

With 48 Khz playback, lower signal to noise ratio, dsp effects, etc- it should sound better. Of course, you do need decent speakers . . .

the ensonique is a very poor sound card. can't say much about sb16.. but the ensonique emits a fuzz noise to all sound coming out. especially when you crank up the volume a little bit.

And it is VERY obvious when you put on the heaphones to play counterstrike.. the hiss noise is very annoying.

Great price if it holds! Live! Value doesn't have dolby 5.1 decoding. I'd get the newegg card if available.

I have an Ensoniq AudioPCI card connected to a set of Altec Lansing ACS48s and don't notice any appreciable difference from when my SBLive Value was connected to them.

These guys are in Fremont. For those in the Bay Area they will take local pickup orders. I've dealt with them in the past, nice people.

Hopefully its not a pricing error!

Answering a couple of questions above:

The Ensoniq and SB16 PCI are the same card. Creative bought the design out from Ensoniq and then raised the price. Creative, in truth, hasn't engineered anything original for quite a while--they also bought the SBLive EMU chipset. (Dunno about the new Audigy cards.)

And both the Ensoniq and SB16 PCI have been measured with quite excellent specifications--on the order of a frequency response from 20-20,000 Hz +/- 0.1 dB. For stereo playback, they are still all that you need. For the guy with the bad-sounding Ensoniq card--you have a defective one, or a bad interface with you system bus. "Back in the day," meaning just a few years ago, the SB16 PCI was used as the basis for some serious and expensive data acquisition software systems ($500 and up) because it had the best measured performance of any card on the market.

For games, of course, you want a card with multichannel and 3d-sound API support, and the SBLive is still a good choice, maybe the best economical choice around.

Cremefilled:

(If that is your real name...)

Seems you know a lot about this...I have asked this question before
and gotten no answer, so I'll try again.

For sound CAPTURE from an analogue source and for simple STEREO
playback, what is the best sound card < $200. How about the best sound
card, period (for these two purposes). I don't care about gaming
treats, or multi-channel playback.

Is SB Live (value) the best card for a cheap price, or are there better?
I do a decent amount of capture from analogue sources (Reel-to-reel
tape, vinyl (through analogue amp)...

How about for QUADRAPHONIC analogue CAPTURE (not playback)? Any
good cheap cards?

I just ordered this last night... think i paid a total of 38 or something...

The sound card can really make a difference. I used to have a $15 cheapo in my PC using my Klipsch promedia and it was ok... then I put my creative Sb platinum live card or whatever it is called and wow... when I rebooted it after installing it my brother came from the other room and was shocked at the sound of my windows startup...
