So i have a Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty and i just got a Sony BD-ROM drive today. I wanted to know if i can get a Toslink to Mini cable to hookup to my sound card/HT receiver and get Digital 5.1 audio. I was ready numerous forums that said it is possible but the sound card itself would not decode the audio. I am ok with this because i have PowerDVD 8 Ultra, but would there be a quality difference? I was thinking about getting this cable: Toslink to Mini.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Really it'll depend on what type of signal you're wanting to output. Its simple to bypass and send the undecoded signal (say Dolby Digital or DTS), just hook up the correct cable and set the Creative card and the software to passthrough. Now, if you're wanting the lossless codecs and then send a 5.1 PCM, it should be possible, but at the same time I don't know if Creative's card supports it (wouldn't surprise if it doesn't, but at the same time it should).

I've never tried a mini to toslink adapter, but you can definitely use a mini to digital coax if your receiver has a coax input.

Also, you definitely CANNOT pass 5.1PCM or any of the lossless/uncompressed/bitstream formats over toslink or digital coax as they simply will not pass the signal due to bandwidth.

Lastly, why not use analog output if you have PowerDVD Ultra 8? Do you have a receiver/speakers with multi-channel input? PowerDVD will decode all the better formats and send them out over your analog.
