Has anyone else suffered from a "crackling" noise coming from the Soundblaster Live! card when combined with a VIA chipset? I have read a few things on the SB newsgroup that suggests others are having this problem, but no one seems to have a clue on how to fix it. I have changed the PCI slots that it is in, and that does nothing. Can someone help!!???

Thanks!

Stan,

Is the VIA chipset on the KT7-RAID MVP3? In the README of that file it says to be careful if the chipset is not MVP3. Thanks!

I do not get any crackling with a Via KT133, are you sure that it is not the cable, as when I went from coax to optical, I didn't get this occasional crackling noise about every ten minutes, which I think you may be talking about

AMB,

I get the crackling all the time and it is very loud. I used to have an Asus A7V with the same SBLive (which uses the same Via chipset), and there were no crackles... So I know it isn't the cable. It must be something specific to this board, but I can't quite figure it out.

Do you have memory hole enabled in BIOS ,when this is disabled on some boards the crackling noise goes away.

Very interesting... I have had the "crackling" occour on 2 different mother boards. One was an I440BX (MSI 6163 Pro) and the other was a VIA MVP3 (Tyan Trinity S1598C2). On the BX it was related to the bus speed. when running at about 90 it happened all the time. It didn't happen at 100 or 66.

The Trinity ended up being a very interesting story. It happened at any bus speed but ONLY when playing .AVI files. It also only happened when my hard disk (IBM Deskstar 22GXP) had UDMA66 enabled. BTW, the Trinity DID support UDMA66. It never happened when it was in UDMA33 mode.

Just out of curiosity what hard disk do you have??? BTW, I have had no problems with the KX133.

It is an IRQ issue which is covered on creative.com and beaten to death here. Also, make sure lpt1 sharing is checked under SB16 emulation.
Try getting the SB on a happier IRQ

I have reached a conclusion recently:

If you are not overclocking. If you use good quality components. 95% of instabilities are power issues. My friend has all sorts of trouble because he insists on using a 10 year old power strip without any real surge protection. The thing just supplies dirty power that has caused his video card to go haywire until it was power up once without the strip. Also it cause the power to be dirty enough that the 12V feeding the hard drive caused the HD to hiccup, which resulted in a section it refused to read, and didn't report as bad. a zero fill fixed that.

I've had the cracking you've described. I heard that by installing the new SB Live drivers, the problem would be resolved. It worked for my roommate and I, so it wouldn't hurt to give it a try.

I used to have SOME crackling issues with the MVP3 FIC VA503+, but they were not that bad. With my A7V, I have absolutely no problems what so ever.

I used to have the crackling when I play 3D games and playing DVD movies. My mobo is DFI K6BV3+ (VIA MVP3+). Guess what... I updated the mobo's bios, and the noise disappear.
