SoundStorm Configuration Question

I have something like 6 audio jacks on the back of my computer, and I'm wondering if I can setup SoundStorm to output front left and front right to one of them that I don't use. I'm currently using analogue output connected via the front and rear jacks going to my speaker setup.

Is this possible? If so, how? Thanks very much.

i think he is asking if he can use the green plug for his speakers and use another plug for his headphones so that he doesn't have to unplug his speakers every time he wants to use his headphones

That's exactly what I'm asking; thanks for the clarification.

I've searched google on this and nothing has come up. I'm sifting through the documents at nVidia right now, but so far nothing.

It's too bad; I don't want to have to buy a splitter to do this.

i know what you mean, i got all excited about front audio only to find out that if i plugged the front audio into the motherboard, the back audio would be completely diassabled. which would mean i would have to plug my speakers into the front and still unplug them to use headphones.

the only thing i can think of would be to set you computer to "4 speakers" and plug the headphones into the surround speakers plug. then you could set the surround option to clone. I think it only clones stuff from windows media player though..

Yes, but I'm already using the rear output for my speaker setup.

oh yeah you said thay, sorry, my bad

well, im out of ideas unless you could use the optical or coaxial outputs for the speakers, but it doesn't seem like that is an option...

Well, I would love to use the optical out, but I don't know if I can. My speakers have digital in, but it's using a small headphone-jack sized plug. I would need something to convert the optical signal to something that would be compatible with my speakers. I'm not sure that this exists.

Converters exist. First you need the $15 Toslink to RCA converter at Radioshack then from there you convert from coaxial to 3.5mm using something like this where you plug RCA in one end and it comes out 3.5mm.

Interesting, thanks.

The problem is, the adapter you posted appears to be MONO which is obviously a serious problem. I have a feeling I would be very hard-pressed to find one that can do the 4-channel thing.

Don't worry. You should be able to get full Soundstorm using your speakers if you follow Ionizer86 direction. You should notice big improvement in your sound quality when you use Soundstorm.

The audio stream is in digital format. it's just like a serial or USB stream. It doesn't get converted back to discrete channels until it passes thru the dolby DTS decoder in your speakers

OK hold on a second...my speakers have an integrated DTS decoder? I really don't think they do. They're Logitech Soundman Extrusio's or something like that. They're a 4.1 setup, and were never high-end whatsoever. They do have a digital input, but like I said it's a small headphone jack sized plug.

Yeah, most sound cards have those small headphone jack sized digital plugs. I would guess that your speakers don't actually do DD, but instead just do PCM, and upmix it to all 4 speakers.

Is that a serious problem? Can't my computer produce a DD signal and send it straight to the speakers anyway? Why do the speakers need to have a decoder in them? Man, I know way less about this stuff than I thought I did.

Udaf ddfajioe fadderf adf. That's a message. What does it say? Can't figure it out without a key, huh? That's what sending a DD signal to speakers without a decoder does. You'll just get noise from your speakers by sending it DD. YOu'll have to turn DD encoding off on your soundstorm, I would think.
