My first year of high school, the school was in part of a government building, and they had a general cafeteria for that whole section. They made the best bagels ever, and always slapped on a bunch of cream cheese. Not sure if that's what did it, or what, but they were awesome. Probably ridiculously unhealthy but meh. You don't order something from a cafeteria with health in mind.

Their poutine on the other hand was an abomination and should have been considered a national crime. Funny thing is, it looked good, so everybody had to try it at least once even if everybody said not to.

Now I'm hungry for one of those bagels. There was something about them, I don't know what it is, the kind of bread they used or something.

No it is amazing.

Sour cream to dip, plus cucumbers (skins on, of course)/grape tomatoes/baby carrots, plus the latter sprinkled with salt and pepper = WIN

Sour cream + Salad Supreme Seasoning = awesome chip dip

Sour cream is one of those versatile ingredients every kitchen should have. My mother in law makes a coffee cake where she mixes sour cream into batter and then bakes it. Adds a pleasantly mild tang to the cake and moistness that is delicious.

She makes a stew with veggies (also beets) and meat and the soup is blood red from the beet pigment. She adds sour cream to the pot before serving. The sour cream thickens the watery soup and changes it to a pink color (much like adding cream to tomato sauce).

She also makes a refreshing summmer salad out of sliced cucumbers. Salt them first to draw out some of the water and then toss them with some other spices, dill and sour cream. The sour cream becomes like a mayonaise consistency and makes for a delicious salad.

I love how bagels with cream cheese are described as "Probably ridiculously unhealthy" but poutine is OK.

Incidentally, my daughter hates sour cream also. Even she can't say why, but she hates it.

My mom makes something like that too (it sounds like). She slices cucumbers and mixes them with sour cream, chopped onions, and salt and pepper. It's mixed well so the sour cream is kinda runny when it's done. I think that's it. Man it's really good.

Avoid sour cream whenever possible. It really doesn't add much imo, but I understand it if someone wants to improve something that is otherwise dry.

But sour cream is not nearly as vile as mayo. Mayo is the worst.

Sour cream has its many uses as a base for many preps, but I see no reason to put it in a burrito that is already better served with various salsas and meat that isn't dry.

Back in the 60's in the Tampa Bay area if you were running a steak house or even a seafood place that served surf & turf and did not have baked potatoes with sour cream, butter, and chives and reputable it was unheard of.

My Grandfather used to even get a group up and walk out of a few places decades later if they did not do that But I think I only saw that happen once, after the place changed, usually had regular hang outs.

It used to be a thing, like getting a salad with you're dinner if you were getting Prime Rib etc.

Was learning how to eat raw oysters down here at the ole Oyster Bar here in the late 60's and being taught to tell id fresh or not when I was about 7or 8
