That's not an exaggeration.

I remember I was 10 or so, my family and I were coming home from dinner. I saw all these older students standing at the bus stop at pitch dark night.

My dad had some drinks in and it was late. I asked him what these older guys were doing. My dad said they were all going home from after-school studies.

Those poor kids must've been no older than 14, 15.

Must be nice to live in a culture where being smart and educated isn't something that's stigmatized. Remember doing that, not in my younger years but in college stuck in an editing booth. Thankfully never pulled an all nighter though. It's the worst way to study since the brain needs sleep to retain information.

They take to an extreme though. It's not stigmatized, it's a requirement. If you aren't beyond perfect then you might as well kill yourself...

Not much different than my high school experience except I went home at night. Wasn't uncommon to work on homework until midnight - 2am.

Each extreme is as bad as the other.

Unfortunately, while the kids in Korea are great at rote memorization, they're terrible at conceptualizing/abstracting the info into other uses. Prof. friend of mine taught a few years in China, Korea, and Japan and was amazed that they could regurgitate information so precisely, but when asked to use it, they struggled.

And, yes, our system sucks in so many ways, but one thing we try not to do is stifle creativity.

That's not a fair assessment and it sounds more like a psychological defensive maneuver on your part than anything based on reality. Asians are also highly creative. They dominated Princeton and Columbia, at least when I was there. My major was Electrical Engineering and Applied Math at Princeton so, at least for the math courses, a high level of creativity was needed for proofs. Rote got you nowhere.

Never stepped off the military base in Korea but I've been to China and Japan and the amount of respect the cultures have for education is other worldly.

personally i don't think this level is effective. persistence is great yet, but after a certain level, the brain is tired and it isn't effective.

learning for more then 14 hours? you're dead tired. you're not going to retain anything.

The same thing? Yes, you're correct. But if it's different subjects then the brain does retain. Most of my learning is done subconsciously. I learn something, go and do something else, and it just develops in my head. So, yeah, if you start out with an academic subject, then move on to piano, then come back to a different academic subject (or even the same) then your level of understanding will be better. Also, if you're getting feedback from fellow students then that helps as well.

It's a quiet afternoon in suburban Tokyo as a well-dressed boy and his mother enter Nikken, a cram school for kindergartners and preschoolers. The mother bows to staff, confirms a pickup time, and drives off in her Mercedes as the boy hunkers down at that most iconic of Japanese institutions: the cram school.

Japan's juken, or "exam hell," has long evoked images of stressed kids competing for slots at top universities in an all-or-nothing exam. But this approach has increasingly moved down the ladder.

Now, in what is known as ojuken, nursery-schoolers are doing worksheets and attending special classes to secure a seat in primary school that their parents hope will ensure their long-term success.
From Japan's 'exam hell' now reaches into preschool ...

I've a great deal of respect for any culture that puts that much value on education. Not to imply that they are above criticism. But most cultures have a lot worse attributes to criticize.

I remember similar experiences in Grade 7. My English tutor has a lesson plan and unless you pass the quiz at the end of the lesson, you don't go home. and you have to redo the test after an hour more of studying.

And he would beat the shit out of us if he wasn't happy.

Funny thing was the only way to get into his English tutoring class is through connections.

my junior high class had a minimum score. We were supposed to get 80%+ on every single test and quiz.

They study/teach to the test to the point that students don't have time to devote "real education", things that can come handy in the real world.

In the real world:
... according to an exhaustive new study that found the skill level of the American labor force, and the generation soon to join it, has fallen dangerously behind its peers around the world.

The study, conducted by the international Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, found what many already know: That the low-skilled are more likely than others to be unemployed, have bad health and earn much less money; and also that countries with greater inequality in skills proficiency also have higher income inequality...

Young Americans, between 16 to 25, rank the lowest among their peers in the 23 countries surveyed.

Turns out that only Americans with the most “cerebral jobs – the ones that demand high levels of literacy, math and problem-solving skills — fared the best against the rest of the world.

So our brightest might be the best, but where does that leave the rest of us? On a downward trajectory if it's true, as the report suggests, that we're witnessing a massive deterioration in the competitiveness of the generations following the baby boomers.
Your welcome to believe what you want. But in the real world, over time, US students have gotten Fatter and Stupider.

But they still lead the world in Self-Esteem!

Traditional testing is a crappy way to evaluate students in a lot of subjects. Most of the proffessional world works projects. People going into medicine or law are served by the current system. The rest are not.
