high humidity prevents sweating, which is pretty damn awful.
It doesn't prevent sweating. I sweat like a pig in high humidity. It prevents evaporation of the sweat, and hence no cooling ability. I usually wind up soaking through my clothes when I'm outside. Fortunately, that still happens only about 1 week a year in So. NH.

Understood, but the unevaporated sweat sits on your skin and prevents pores from sweating more, correct?

I agree, I can stand the month or two we get in W. Mass (not consistent), but it's still miserable. I just tell myself - "I don't have to shovel it" - I hate snow I have to shovel

I know oldtimers who swear by dousing themselves with straight DEET and smoking a cigar. No thanks.

IME Deer-flies laugh @ 98% DEET... the ONLY thing that helps is thick clothing that creates a physical barrier.

So far this year has actually been cooler then normal in my immediate area (Coastal CT) with a lot of overcast days but I seriously doubt it will last.

Same in the NW. It's been the wettest April/May/June in history and only got up to 59 or something Friday in Portland. Of course the persistent trough here is what causes the high and all the heat in the middle of the country. Sorry guys!

High humidity does not effect sweating directly itself... it effects evaporation which is the mechanism in sweating that effectively cools.

I'll tell you what CAN effect sweating though.... DEET can absolutely shut down sweat-glands when applied directly to the skin which can contribute to over-heating during vigorous exercise in particular.

It's not really even that, you'll still sweat buckets. The normal function of the skin is that as the body heats up, the skin releases sweat so that it can evaporate off that hot water and cool down the rest of the body. If it doesn't evaporate, it just sits there on the skin until it drips off, meanwhile your body's temperature is still rising. It takes very little time in a high humidity environment over 99 degrees to pass into heat exhaustion, even while doing absolutely nothing. Anything above 85 with moderate exertion will get you there too eventually.

I appreciate the additional info 😎

I don't think that is right. It'll just start running down your skin and soak your clothes.

You are correct.... the hotter you get the more you'll sweat, right up until your body no longer has sufficient water (and at a more extreme point salt/other minerals) to do so.

And when that happens if you don't have access to a much cooler place AND more water/salt almost immediately you'll be in some serious trouble.

However if you compare humans "cooling-systems" with many other mammals we're vastly superior when it comes to dumping excess-heat by sweating. This is one of the main reasons early human hunters could run down nearly any prey over distance.

Yep it's currently 59 F outside. It's almost mid June. Nothing above 77 so far. Normally, we would have had several 80 degree days by now.

Remember when it was just fluoride in the water people worried about? Now it's, Is there water? And if so, how many human bodies have been dissolved in it?
Water will be the most valuable substance on earth eventually.

I digress…

91F with heat advisory, not sure what the index is, but it's stupid hot out right now, the electric heat pump cannot keep up. The AC side.

Going to be a miserable week this week for work. (outdoors) south central KY is ridiculously humid.

Ugh heat dome moves east just in time for hot air from Africa to blow in and keep the temps in the 100s this week too. And on top of that we get a bunch of Saharan dust to make it 100s with clogged sinuses. Seriously fuck this summer that hasn't even started. Already the most 100 degree days we have ever had up to June 13th in a year and by a large margin. We usually don't have our first 100 degree day of the year until July 1st but this year we're at 14 with our first on May 7th.

Ugh just looked up Bowling Green, KY's weather and it's 97 with a 71 degree dew point. That's horrific. At least that Saharan wind dropped our dewpoint to 59 right now in San Antonio where it's currently 101. Feels like shit but not as bad as Bowling Green. Guess you guys are getting your turn with this bastard heat dome now?

And is this really a heat "dome" or just a heat wave? A dome a very specific event that is essentially a convection air flow that traps hot air in and doesn't let in overnight cooling. That's what turbo fucked the PNW. We get coastal fronts in from the evening that cool things down. This trapped hot air in it's place.

Here in Portland I'm in slippers, a sweatshirt, and I wore gloves this morning on my bike ride. It was 48 degrees. It topped out around 57 today. In the middle of June. Last year we had already hit 100 (over Memorial Day) by this time and were two weeks off from hitting 118. We've had three days in a row over 70 this year. And a top temp of like 78. Crazy what one year to the next brings. I guess I'll take this.

Can you guys keep that shit down there? Really enjoying this right now

Working on procuring some land up in northern NH or Vermont to sit on, pretty sure a mass migration is coming within my lifetime. Large parts of this country are fucked.
