I searched like 3 different ways and came up empty, so if this has been answered before, my apoligies..

Anyways, my setup:
- Soyo Dragon K7
- GeForce2 MX
- 6 USB Ports (the two by the keyboard, and 4 additional via the Motherboard's USB3-6 outputs with the respective cards from computer store)
- MS Intellipoint (usb)
- Logitech iTouch keyboard (usb)
- HP 812c (usb)
- Scandisc MMC reader (usb)
- Sony digital camera (usb)
( there's a pattern here )

Problem (and this is what i emailed this to Soyo Tech Support, doubt i'll hear back anytime soon, heh)

<<
I have two USB addons to utilize USB ports 3-6, and the following problems occur to the devices no matter what port (one through six) they are plugged into:

I have a serious USB issues issue with any one of my Keyboard, Mouse, and Printer "cycling" in XP, I'll be moving the mouse, and bam, XP loses it and i get a popup of "unrecognized device" in the tray, if i unplug and plug into a different USB slot, it might come back on, otherwise it takes a reboot, and even then, its impossible to tell how long it will last
My keyboard CONSTANTLY gets lost by the motherboard, even plugging into a different USB port doesn't help, it eventually comes back on its own
While printing i here XP's sounds of Device connected/disconnected, but because of the printers buffer, i never loose any info, but the Mouse and Keyboards issues for sure make my computer impossible to operate...

please advise..... thanks in advance

if anyone has any ideas suggestions, that would totally rock, these issues are driving me up the wall

i know that there were issues with the kt266 chipset when you tried to overclock the fsb over ~140mhz.

if that doesnt help, here is a *bump* for you

I have the same board and have a similar problem keeping USB support turned on in the BIOS. I turn it on and it keeps turning itself off after bootup. Even tried disabling the serial ports thinking they may be using the same resources but no go. Just now looked in USB Root Hub Properties in Device Manager and disabled a setting (unchecked a box) that allowed the computer to turn off the device to save power........and this is a desktop..........go figure. Maybe that will cure it.

hopefully that works out for you..

my problems were cured by upgrading the power supply to 400w.. the case i had bought was only 125w (i know, crappy!!)

also what you can try is this, once the computer is on and your usb device is on just switch it from usb ports. sometimes when you install usb devices while turned off it may have trouble seeing it.

Well, I found out the problem.......somehow my USB cable got unplugged from the back of the tower, maybe by one of the animals. Should have checked that out first. Was all set to do a BIOS upgrade. Figured it would have to be something simple when none of the Soyo FAQ's or Google searches pointed toward that problem Anyways now USB support works like a charm.

I wish my issues were solved...

my computer wont stay up..

- i have tried XP Home and Pro with and w/o RAID going
- i have tried 2000 with w/o RAID going
- i have tried different memory
- i upgraded the power supply as mentioned above
and i am now using a brand new video card

trying to eliminate what hardware could be causing the issue, I have definitely eliminated software i think/hope

Have you tried swapping your cards around in the slots. Check Device Manager and see if USB support is sharing resources with another device........in that case changing cards around may redo IRQ assignments. But resetting with a reboot means that it's software related.

This is what appears in the HELP menu of XP pro>>>

Resolving USB controller installation issues
In Device Manager, USB game controllers are listed under Human Interface devices (in Devices by type view). If the controller does not appear in Device Manager, then USB may not be enabled in BIOS or EFI. When you are prompted as you start your computer, enter BIOS or EFI setup, and enable USB.
If USB is enabled in BIOS or EFI but the USB host controller does not appear in Device Manager (under Universal Serial Bus controllers), or a yellow warning icon appears next to the host controller name, then the version of BIOS or EFI may be outdated. Contact the maker or vendor for your computer and obtain the current version of BIOS or EFI.
If the controller appears in Device Manager, right-click the controller name and then click Properties. Problems and suggested actions are displayed under Device status. For more information, click Related Topics.
USB ports have a separate entry in Device Manager. To check the device status, click Universal Serial Bus controllers, right-click USB Root Hub, and then click Properties. If you do not see USB Root Hub, you might not have a USB port installed on your computer.
You can also use the Hardware troubleshooter to diagnose and solve problems with hardware devices such as USB game controllers. Start the Hardware troubleshooter.

Arg, this has gotten to the point where i want to pull out this damn motherboard and start again...

i just got this system back up to a semblence of working order (video card was causing blue screens, to find this out, i un-RAID-ed, changed OS's, swapped memory, upgraded the power supply to 400W as mentioned above, and have been saying choice 4 letter words for the past few weeks)

so all seemed well, but i was just printing a bunch of envelopes on my HP printer (USB), and low and behold, konk go my my Intellimouse (USB) and my iTouch keyboard (USB).... going to the back of the computer and unplugging and plugging back in fixed the issue, and of course, they conked out again....

this is sooooooooooooo incredibly frustrating

i read that long thread above, all looks well...... (i have two of the add-on cards to go from Motherboard to USB 3-6)

if someone has ANY more ideas, it'd be so appreciated, i'm out of patience and answers.. and Soyo tech support is a friggen joke... took them 6 days to reply "whats you BIOS version" when i included it in the first email i sent !!!! useless.... absolutely useless.....

Thought about a USB PCI card ? A backwards compatable USB2 card is around $35. USB1 card at $25 or so. Probably cheaper than a new mobo. If all else fails RMA that puppy back to the OEM. But that would mean downtime if thats the only computer.

no not a USB PCI card...

the Dragon has 2 sets of pins on the MB itself where you can hook up a small daughter card (like this piece)

i know this is a USB issue, because i can plug my mouse and keyboard into the PS/2 slots and it seems work, but thats just not "right"

each USB root hub is limited to 500mA. I've seen numerous issues with webcames, scanners, and printers which utilize 500 EACH. Go to your device manager, then to usb+, then right click on each usb root hub , then the power tab to see the power consumption. Although you might have that many ports available, you should only have 2-3 root hubs (if memory serves). Any non self-powered usb hubs (or keyboards) may also contribute to over-consumption of power by USB devices. Try to span out all of your devices amongst the 3 root hubs to evenly distribute power demands. Or try an AC usb hub. hope this helps ya

for sure that helps.. i will pick up an A/C based bub and see what happens (which of course, this totally makes the Soyo's "6 built in ports" totally useless.....eh)
