SP1 not installing

I DL'd the stand alone version and started install at 3:15pm... it is now 9:23pm.

I was not paying attention in the beginning as I knew it was going to be a long process...

What I have seen:

The first time I checked it was on installing updates 3 of 3 @ 70%+

I've now seen Installing Service Pack: 1 of 3 twice and from the second time on I have been sitting in front of it, now on SP stage 3 of 3 @ 76%...

Has it taken anyone else this long? I have bad feeling it is failing and restarts, thus restarting the install all over again. Has anyone else seen this?

Any ideas? what should I do if it keeps failing?

It usually takes 45 to 60 mins if you already have all the updates installed. It slows down when there are issues with the driver installation.

Ok, it finally got to 100% on stage 3 of 3 and said:

"Service Pack did not install. Reverting changes.
Do not turn off your computer."

I was waiting for a BSoD the whole time.

Well, it reverted changes and gave me an error code so now I know where to look in KB articles.

Did you disable any antivirus programs before starting the upgrade?
MS says that some av programs lock files and prevent the upgrade from finishing.

Did you see sp1 when you checked Windows Update? If not that meant that you had some sound or mb drivers that are out of date.

I had a really bad original install... I have reinstalled windows and now a whole lot of things seem to be working better. I will post here with an update on how the sp1 install goes now.

My hung up at the third stage. I rebooted (I know, the directions said "don't turn off the computer") and then it finished up fairly quickly. No problems since.

SP1 ruined two vista ultimate installs on both of my 780i machines. My x38 went just fine.

Did everything Microsoft said to do and it still won't install. No errors on the Harddrive, no memory errors, but I continue to get error: 0x80070026 on either the standalone or the Microsoft Update install.

I think you have 4 GB Ram, remove one of your RAM modules, install Vista SP1 and put it back again. If you have retail version you don't have to reactivate.

I don't have the retail version, I have the OEM version. So what does that mean exactly?

You don't have to reactivate Vista just because you've added/removed RAM, no matter what verson (OEM or retail).

I don't see why going to 3GB under x64 will help (sounds like a x32 problem) but I'll give it a shot and see if it installs afterwards.

Well if it was the problem it didn't fix it. I went down to 3GB and I still get error: 0x80070026.

You have to make sure that you have all the pre-requisite updates installed, and all the drivers are up to date.

And as someone said, disable any active real-time protection/security software.

Last, but not least - make sure that your hardware is perfectly stable, especially the memory (voltage, timings - check with memtest and Orthos). Vista is extremely sensitive (?!?) to RAM problems.

Yes, yes. Did it, it. Done and done. I ran through everything and came up with no errors yet SP1 still refuses to install with that damn error.

Are you having any other problems? Can you manually create a restore point with no errors? Have you tried do a backup?
I was having issues with those things and I knew I had a bad install, so going into SP1 I thought there might be problems.

I reinstalled Vista and was able to keep all my old files under a file called windows.old. So basically I didn't loose anything and now I'm just grabbing the files I couldn't back up and moving them to the new install. After I move them I'm deleting them so the HDD isn't so full.

Everything is working now and SP1 installed in about 35 mins.

I downloaded mine from Microsoft Update and it took 35 minutes to download and install... no issues and only one reboot.

Well, I know I definitely have a problem somewhere. My mobo is screwed because the USB ports died last year sometime and now I'm using a USB card for them, and for some reason my DVD+DL drive won't burn any DL disks successfully (worked fine and then one day it just stopped- tried another drive, same problem- single layer is fine). So I either think my mobo is screwed, I have an error on my HD too, I'm really not sure what's up. I did a fresh Vista install not too long ago though and had no problems with that.

At this point I just might start with a new mobo and take it from there. Only problem is I have 5300 1.8v ram w/E6600 CPU, and I wanted to get a newer mobo that goes a little faster and supports SLI. Do any of the newer mobos support 5300 1.8v ram?
