God I hate cancelling out 20 icq spams every time I sit down at my puter! This never used to happen on IcQ. Whats up? What changed? I always answer "Quit spamming me you loser!" and then put them on ignore. They just keep coming! There is no end to them! Is this some new feature on ICQ?

ICQ got ruined a LONG time ago when AOL bought it out - you're just late figuring that out unfortunately. AIM is the best way to go

When I was a no0b a couple years ago, I played around with ICQ, and got spammed quite often. Once I got an ICQ instant message to the effect of "Dude, can you click on this URL? It's not working for me on my NT box, but it might work for you. By the way, it's got pictures of naked teens and whatnot, so if you're in to that..."

ICQ is useless, overly complicated (it sort of takes over your computer), way too cutesy, and too loaded with advertising.

Now that you mention it, recently I just got those messages too, from persons/parties I don't know. Until now I just closed those windows. mmm.... will look whether that option is available, to accept only messages from contact list. thnx for the hint.

You can easily find the IP of the originator. Do a DOS on them and they wont be bothering anyone for a while.

Yeah I have the same problem....the spams have hurt the e-marlteting guys a lot.....the genuine e-marketing is dying slowly and I can hear their cry !

But, how long can they afford it ? Everyone has limited energy in what they do !! So let's be optimistic !

Cuz of all these spams I have almost shut down my hotmail acccount...It sucks big time !

rule #1 with spam, never EVER answer. you only confirm that your account is active and they will proceed to spam bomb you. thats probably why you get 20 when i get 1 every couple weeks. since its so infrequent for me, i just delete users that i don't know that message me. if you open icq you can see the user without looking at the message.

I some times get replies "I am an ICQ bot" wtf? My sister NEVER answers them and she gets a ton of spam a day, so I dont think thats it. I put them on ignore after they spam me, so I dont think it is because I reply. Its to bad that I have to go through so many spams each time I want to use ICQ, spammers $uck.

I just found a "do not accept multi recipient messages from : ALL USERS" I will try that, otherwise its accept messages from contact list only.

when you install ICQ it asks you if you want to be listed in their white pages. It does this rather discretely and most people are eager to get the setup program over with, so they tell it "yes." Well... there is your source of spam. That is how they find you to spam you. I always turn off being included into the white pages, and I get NO spam from ICQ. It's great

You can turn off the white page listing from inside the ICQ properties, but that will only stop NEW spam. As for the older ones, once they have you... they have you.

I quit using ICQ a long time ago and have since switched to MSN messenger (though I shun and avoid MSN everything_else). It's pretty nice, and aside from the little ad in the corner of the main window (which can be closed), there are no advertisements, and no spam. Fortunately, all of my friends who are on the internet are smart enough to also choose good IM programs, so I don't need to use ICQ to talk to any of them.

Use Trillian. It's kick-ass.

I haven't received a single spam since I started using it. Just disable WWPager and EmailExpress messages (these are where 99% of the spam comes from.)
