Hey all,

Thanks for the Dolby answer, I appreciate it.

I have scoured the net looking for a well done review of the BOSE Companion 3 speakers, and have found nothing. Does anyone know a particularly well done review of these speakers, or can anyone who has them give me their opinion on them?

Also, some recent events have given me a bit more spending money for these speakers, which brings the 680s back into play. Does anyone have these speakers? I'd love to hear from someone who has them. Also, particularly good reviews would be nice.

Thanks
Jim

How do you all feel about Klipsch 2.1? Last time I heard Klipsch speakers I didn't like them as much as the logic.

They are great. I have had mine for abit over a year now and love them. They are the best computer speakers I have heard so far.

I can't speak for the Companion 3 set specifically, but in general, Bose speakers tend to be overpriced. Bose spends a great deal on marketing, and they like to position themselves as a "top-of-the-line" speaker manufacturer, but for what you pay for, you can get a lot more bang for your buck elsewhere.

Thanks all

Any more opinions on the Bose Companion 3? I'd like to hear from someone who has them.

Also prices would be lower, because I have a bose outlet near my house.

I personally have in my apartment townhouse the Klipsch 2.1, 4.1, z560's and z680's. They are all amazing speaker sets.

the 5.1 set is nice for voice and helps with what i describe as localization. You really sort of get a better sense of forward vs rear with a 5.1 set. If it means enough to buy for you, then by all means go for it, there is nothing particularly damning about a 4.1 set over a 5.1 set.

I have connected to my computer the 560's and have found them to be the best thing to happen to my computer sound in years (and i'm a classicaly trained musician, go figure). The only real gripes I have about it is no treble control on the control pod (which itself (the pod) is a little lighter than i'd like, also digital controls over analog controls would be nice for the 560's) but this is easily fixed with the audigy card in my computer. Also, you're talking about a speaker set that is almost 4 years old now. They will be replaced soon (i guess you can argue that they have by the 5300's)

What really appeals to me about the 560's was the price, the power, and the performance. The 560's have yet to disapoint me. They are very well thought of, and I have no regrets. As to your question of the center channel, three letters, M-e-h. My main purpose is music and games, and the 4.1 can do it for me.
The 680's are amazing. They just don't offer quite enough over the 560's to be worth replacing my set, I'll wait for maybe the next generation or the one after. What they do offer is 500w of power (thx certified like the 560's) and an awesome control station with all sorts of inputs for everything from computers to console game machines (in analog and digital input formats). The satellites and the sub are actually very similiar. The color is slightly different.
In my opinion the 560's control pod is better than the wired remote bizdeal for the 5300's, but other than that, the sets are very similiar. There is obviously 5.1 in the 5300's and I believe they are better suited for connecting to other non-computer applications, i dont know how important that is for you.

I would definatley say if you really want a solid audio expirience go with the 560's over the 640's. My roommate (last year) had the 640's in our dorm room which with lack of a better word sucked compared to the raw power of the 560's or even the Klipsch 2.1. (a triple room, and the one with the 640 couldn't even compare with us, RAWR) Though they are a well designed speaker set, there is a good reason why the higher lines (560's 680's) cost more than the lower end (640 or 340).

The lay way to describe matrix (it's on the 560's too) is that it takes a 2 channel input and plays it over 4. Meaning: The right channel front plays the same as the right channel rear. Same with the left side. Some people like it, i don't use it.

The Klipsch line is very nice as well, i'd prefer the 4.1 over the 2.1 line (it's a bit more, but i believe in general now still under 200) the speaker design imo is a little better done technically then the logitech giving the satelltites better quality than the logitech set (though not jaw dropping better)

With the audio: it is mainly your preference. Each brand has a 'style' if you will. The Cambridge sets have pretty solid midranges, the Logitechs have solid overall sound with the emphasis on the lower range, and the Klipsch are just solid on every level with no particular emphasis. From what i'm getting in your posts, you seem to be someone who prefers Logitech stylings.

Here's what I use, and I like it.

Audigy (first gen, with the firewire (nice bonus)). I am using linux with the Alsa emu10k1 drivers.

$69 OEM-style from a local computer store. Cheaper now, I got it when audigy2 first came out.

My speaker setup is a $300 home theater setup from Kmart.

Sony STR-K750P reciever. 5.1 Dobly/Pro-logic 1 and 2, DTS and all that happy horsesh*t.

The speakers that came with the setup would be best described as "extremely average". But they are small sattelite-style speakers and are easy to stick anywere.

1 4-speaker center, 2 2-speaker fronts, 1 subwoofer with it's own little 75 watt amp, 2 2-speaker rears (same speakers as front.)

75watts per channel.

With it all set up you can get pretty good sound. You can tell some of the lower midrange gets muffled and the subwoofer isa bit boomy at higher volumes. Good stereo imaging, though. (In multiplayer games you can realy tell the direction left-right were the other guy's foot steps are and transitions are smooth)

I got this because it was only a 50-75 dollars more expensive then the reciever alone, and Sony makes very clean sounding recievers and this will give me time to save up for some good speakers.

What a 5.1 gets you over a regular stereo is the ability to make sound more encompasing, basicly all it realy gets you is back speakers.

It won't improve music listening much over good quality stereo setup. What it's designed for is movie-style special effects, were you get very impressive sounds coming directly from the side or rear of your listening setup.

It's not capable of creating the subtle transitions and small directional changes front-to-back that you get from a nice stereo setup right-to-left. Even in movies that fully support the digital formats.

There are formats created for subtle front-back sound using setups with stuff like 3 speakers or some such nonsense. They used scientific theories on how the sound waves interact and reflect off of each other to create areas of different sounds. Very esoteric and hard to set up, sounds like crap if done incorrectly. Don't remember what it is called, though. Something that started developement in the 50's or something.

EDIT: here is what I was thinking of Ambisonic

Then you have crazy new stuff like Holophonic Sound.

One of the big things that I noticed is that the correct "triangle" setup with stereo speakers is different with center speakers. You have to set the front speakers much farther apart and slighlty forward with them pointing towards you then you normally would do with just a 2 speaker set up. The 2 front stereo speakers are still the most important ones though.

I have the Z-560's and I can't imagine much of anything that is better for the price... As such I recommend them over the others.

Thanks for the help guys, especially all the experience from oogabooga!

Can anyone testify for these speakers a bit more, or the bose companion 3 or the megaworks 5.1 550 thx?

Thanks
Jim

Well, basically, the only complaint I've seen anyone have about the 560's is that there is too much bass, but I love bass myself and it is pretty easy to lower it (there is a knob for it on the controller, and you can change bass levels under sound card properties as well). They have great power for the price, and in almost all reviews I have seen they basically match the Klipsch 4.1's. I'm not that knowledgable as far as speakers go, but I know that these are...good...

I would grab the Z-5300's, they seem like great speakers and I am about to get a set myself after listening to a friends Z-680's and not noticing any difference except for a bommier bass.

I dont know much about computer speakers, but i do know a bit on HT speaker and here is what i can say about bose.

BOSE SPEAKERS SUCK
PERIOD

they are overpriced and advertise way to much.

Just go to ur local best buy and compare the bose speakers to JBL or Klispch

i bet u anything u will think the bose speaker sounds airry and empty.

all bose speakers do is puch alot of air to make the speaker sound loud and overwhelming.
They have no good lows and no good highs at all, that is why you cant find a rating for them.

do yourself a favor and just go out to your local best buy or sound advice or something and listen to all the speakers yourself. everyone has a different ear.

some ppl acually do love bose speakers. they just like big boomy noise.

but me, i would take a nice, and clear anyday. for HT, paradigm is what i love. affordable and natural sounding.

I am in college in a dorm too. Seeing the amount of room I had and that I am sharing a room with someone else, I decided the surround sound just would not be able to be set up properly and was not worth it right now. I bought a set of 2.1 Cambridge soundworks Megaworks, here. They sound excellent, better than anyone elses I know, but are a little expensive. I would suggest a 2.1 system, but in the end it is up to you.

The reason why all you can find about comparisons with Bose speakers purely on sound quality is out of fear of litigation. A while back when Bose began this aggressive form over function campaign, high profile sites and magazines did make comparisons with them and objectively evaluated their sound quality. Bose did not like what was being reported, claiming that the tests were invalid and unfair. But litigating review sites and magazines costs these small organizations money, so ever since then all you can find are barely references to sound quality and 100% of them are neutral to glowing reviews and all of them are basically comparisons of looks and styling.

So if you like style over actual sound quality, go right ahead and buy Bose. But they are not an honest company no matter how you slice it and supporting them is not something I would really condone.

Thanks for the message on the bose, all.

I am looking more and more into the 680s, and was wondering what you could all tell me about Dolby ProLogic 2? It sounds like it could be VERY good for me, a heavy music listener, and it also sounds like it is much better than the matrix mode on the z-5300s.

Thanks
Jim

p.s. I followed the creative 2.1 link, was that 2.1 system really 350 bucks? Wow

Clicking on the link, I noticed this:

"Note: Speaker wire is NOT included."

Is that true? Why would they sell PC speakers without the speaker wires necessary to use them? It's not like those are audiophile quality HT speakers where the user would be paranoid about speaker wire quality. That aside, those look like the 2.1 version of the Gigaworks, and probably are the best mainstream 2.1 set available.

Actually, now that I looked at bit more, they are selling a 213 set which is better than the 211 set mentioned above. A $500 2.1 speaker set that weighs 35lbs and has 13" high satellites seems a bit extreme for a set designed for a PC, but I bet they sound pretty nice.

based on the 680 reviews I am reading, I am becoming more and more convinced that they are for me.

I just had a few questions:

a) How do I know if they are compatible with Macs?
b) Is the ProLogic II good or no? Could someone tell me from experience, especially compared to matrix?
c) I looked for low prices through pricegrabber, but are there any really good deals on these speakers that you know of? Obviously, I want the lowest price. Also, are there any other sites like pricegrabber? (other than froogle)

Thanks
Jim

1. Apple is selling the Z-680's with their G5's, so you shouldn't have a problem as long as you have a 5.1 capable sound card.

2. On my Home Theater Pro Logic II is great, but the thing you should realize is that unless you are going to be hooking something like an external DVD player or Xbox into the speakers, it's really pointless, because the Sound Card will do that for you. Also, from experience, you will not be able to have these speakers full tilt in a dorm room, you will have people telling you to shut them off all the time, because the Bass is so strong and they get so loud, I wouldn't base your decision on wattage, but on quality of speaker. Like I said earlier, I would grab the Z-5300's, they should be a good in between. Or as the gentleman said earlier the Klipsch 2.1 or 4.1 setup. Good luck.

I have klipsch promedia 2.1's and i love em. However, I'd get the z560's if I was in the market for new speakers right now.

Hey all,

One review said that the 680s werent worth the money over the 560s. How do you all feel about this?

Obviously, the built in decoders are nice, but the thing that really matters to me is whether Pro Logic II is that better than "Matrix Mode" on the 560s.

Someone who could comment on that would be great.

Thanks
Jim

Also, someone said if I had a 5.1 sound card, I wouldn't need pro logic II for music. Does my Audigy 2 take care of ProLogic II? Because from what I know, the fact that my card is 5.1 doesn't mean it takes a two channel source and makes it 5.1

Thanks
