I am looking for a quality speaker setup for my computer. Will be mostly playing high-bitrate music tracks coupled with a x-fi xtreme music sound card. Budget is around $250 or so.

If you only need 2.1 these will fit the bill.
I have these and they are excellent ....... will blow you out of the room!

might be able to get an old amp ($50 used?) and $100 on each speakers (for 2 speakers)...or maybe spend a bit more for 2.1 set.

I dont need a 5.1 setup necessarily. Primarily, this will be used for music and am looking for clean output all the way through the frequency range. I am fairly picky about sound quality when it comes to music.

The iFi is nice if you can find them online or at Costco. They are around $200 though, a bit more than the 2.1 Promedias, which they were meant to replace.

If I am correct 5.1 system has no benefit over a 2.1 system for music purposes, since albums are not recorded in surround sound?

For the best BYFB, get some nice headphones instead. Less space and better SQ for your $. Also better for gaming than 2.1.

But, if speakers are a must, ignore what I just said.

That is true for most music, except DVD-A soundtracks, which are few and far inbetween. Demand is low because of the limited systems that can play DVD-A tracks, and some people dislike the fact that DVD-A is limited to analog-only (by law).

Don't get the klipsch speakers if you are interested in full frequency response in the low end. They sound great in the mid to high end, but with the klipsch 2.1, the sub sucks. It's nice and musical, but it does not go low at all.

I had a 2.1 and hated it. I got a klipsch 5.1, and it's a lot better - dual 8" sub vs a single 6.5" in the 2.1.

I still feel like the Logitech speakers have a much better low end response, but if you like the highs more than the lows get the ProMedia.

If you listen to hip hop, reggae, or other bass-heavy types of music, and especially if you are used to having a good sub in your car - like a quality 12" or something - then no doubt about it, get Logitechs.

Of course, you could always use a home theater receiver and buy component speakers

Klipsch Ifis
They have much better satelite speakers than the promedias, and I imagine the sub is better too. They might be hard to find.

Right now I am at my parents' house with a set of promedias. They have much worse midrange than my speakers at my dorm, which have RSX-4 satelites. The ifi's have RSX-3 satelites, which I am sure are a big upgrade over the promedia speakers.

Otherwise you might want to consider getting a reciever and some bookshelf speakers.

Ifi's
They have two way satelites.

The ifi's have both higher quality satelites and tighter bass.

The z-5500's are only good if you're a bass freak who doesn't care if it's accurate, or you need 5.1 sound.

For music nothing beats a good receiver with a nice set of stereo speakers hooked to em. It's going to probably be more than $250 unless you buy used though.

I would look on audiogon, ebay, or craigslist if you are looking for a deal on the iFi. The lowest I've seen are refurbed sold by Klipsch for $180, and Costco/Sam's sells them for $200 (though they may be harder to find there now; last time my local Costco had it was three months ago, and they only had 2 left).

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the Klipsch promedia 2.1 system and the Klipsch Promedia GMX A-2.1 System is? Which one sounds better?

The Promedia are better. THe GMX might be more "stylish", definately more futuristic looking, if that's your thing, but they're lower end.
