Speakers vs. Headphones

Which do you guys think would be better?

A set of (relatively) decent 2.1 speakers?
A set of nice headphones?

I do alot of gaming, plus the occasional movie

Depends...what sound card are you using and how much are you willing to spend?
Personally I would prefer the Speakers, as headphones alone don't satisfy my comfort zone BTA many will swear they alone meet their needs...

Headphones will get you more price/performance.

Speakers really get you a more "free" experience though. If your budget is Less than $200 I would go headphones

Many will come back saying this is crazy, but it all has to do with different standards.

The swan stereo speakers are the first I would consider buying and the are 2.0 if I remember correctly not 2.1.

Yeah, headphones is going to get you better sound quality, but I don't think I could live with just a set of headphones. Unless you get some really nice ones, I'd think that you wouldn't want to wear them for hours on end. I also don't really like watching a movie with headphones unless it's late at night and I'm forced to. I think it's more of a movie experience if you're not closed into a set of headphones and attached to a cord

What kind of budget are we talking here?

Klipsch Promedias or the Swan M200s are nice sets for the money.

I say get speakers, I use headphones a little but they get uncomfortable after awhile, for some nice 2.1 speakers that are pretty cheap check out logitech Z-3

some comfy headphones i prefer, i can play games and music louder without annoying people , and be able to hear better as a result of not being annoyed by people! And its usually easier to decipher what direction enemy is on headies as the sound will go through one ear only, and ya wont get confused!!!

My budget is low... I don't plan on getting anything super nice. I'm thinking a nice set of phones and some cheap speakers on the side. While I would use the headphones for almost everything, it'd be nice not to have to put them on everytime I sat down.

Does anybody have a recommendation for a good set of 'phones?

And as for cheap speakers to go with the headphones: A $50 set of logitech X-530s would do you nicely. It's not that powerful on paper, but it's 5.1 and feels expensive, and sounds damn good (to my untrained ears).

For cheap 5.1 speakers I like logitech z-640 they sound great, have nice long cables for easy placement, have contols on the center speaker which works really well. They are a pain to find but its so worth it.

JustDeals has the z-640s along with some excellent deals on refubished speakers and other logitech products.

how would the sennheiser hd 497 compare to the pc 150? I'd like the microphone, but the headset itself looks somewhat uncomfortable. I'm fairly sensitive about it too.

that's what I'd recommend. they have a pretty big soundstage so they are ideal for movies and gaming. the 497s have a pretty small soundstage. they're good for the money though so either set you'd be satified.
