Can the WinMe Promo upgrade (from Win98 and SE) be clean installed or does it have to be installed over Win98?
During installation, do you get the option of not installing the new Restore feature? How about the option of not installing the Multimedia 7.0 player?
If you have to install the Restore feature, can it be disabled? I heard it uses 200 megs of harddrive space enabled or disabled...is this correct???

That's what I came here looking for the answer to. Don't make me buy it just to try it. :|

From what I gather reading posts on alt.windows-me, yes, you can do a clean install from the promo upgrade. Here's some clips of what's been posted:

<< The promotional disk is the same as the full upgrade disk except only Win98
can be used as a qualifying product. In other words it will not upgrade
Win95 systems. This is to give a price break to those who upgraded to 98

Q:

<< Does anyone know if you can do a clean install with the special upgrade
version of Win Me for 98 or 98SE. Or is it like 98SE Updates and you need
to have 98 preinstalled? Thanks for any replies.

A:

<< You can do a clean install, but you'll need to have the Win98 CD nearby.

from what i know, with either win98se or winme upgrade, you can do a clean install. just that during install it will ask you to provide a previous version of windows. all you need to do is pop in the win98 CD.

rominl is correct. You can do a clean install, except that at some point of the installation, it will ask you for the qualifing O/S to upgrade from. All you have to do at that point is insert your Win98 cd in the cd drive(pull out the Win me cd first obiously if you have it in the cd drive dahh)
and after it detects it replace it with your WIN ME cd to continiue installation. If you have two cd drives, like I do, just place the Win 98 on the other cd drive, and your all set.
Hopes that helps.

Now during the install does it give you the option of not installing the Restore feature and the Multimedia 7.0 player???

Not during the install, it didn't give the option to leave out MMP7 or Restore feature. I did custome install and found no such options. You could use 98Lite or something similar to completely remove those features during install, though.

you can disable system restore after you have installed winme

for ms media player 7.0, i can't find a way to remove it or change it back to 6.x. however, i find it quite good though. why everyone is talking about uninstalling it?

To use Media Player 6.4 in WINME just associate files to use 6.4 instead of 7.0.....WinMe comes with both 6.4 and 7.0....no need to uninstall.
I'm not sure why people hate 7.0 either, I don't mind it, looks better than 6.4.

I have 2 PCs, both having the same Windows installation history:

1. Back in 1998, installed the Upgrade Win98 on new HD. I copied the \Win98 directory from the Win98 Upgrade CD into C: then ran Setup from there. When prompted, I inserted the Win95 Full Version CD for verification.
2. Last night, installed WinME Stepup on top of the Win98 installation.

WinME Stepup behaved differently on the 2 PCs though.

On one, it never prompted for a qualifying Windows CD. I thought maybe it found that Win98 was already installed.

On the other, it prompted for the path of a qualifying Windows product (can't remember the exact wording of the prompt). Since it was asking for the path, and I was lazy to pull up my Win98 or Win95 CD, I just typed C:\Win98, where I have the copy of the \Win98 directory of my Win98 Upgrade CD. It worked. It never asked for a qualifying Windows CD.

The only difference between the 2 PCs that I can think of is that I applied Windows 98 Service Pack 1 about a year ago on the first PC but not on the other.

Rominl and Trashman: The reason many dislike Media Player 7 is that is bloated with useless features, and it's much slower than the good ol' 6.4. I'd prefer using 6.4 over 7 anyday, much faster, and the visual interface doesn't really matter to me.

The reason I'm interested in not installing Restore and the Multimedia Player 7.0 are 1) I've been using Win98 for 2 years now and have never had a reason to use a Restore or GoBack program. Why would I need it now and use up 100's of megs??? 2) I've heard nothing but bad things about Multimedia Player 7.0. From being a resource hog to placing specific I.D's on MP3's so only your machine can play them....
I think I'm gonna pass on WinMe for now........Greg

i have not seen a speed problem with wm7, although i have a p3 933 mhz, doubt that even a 500 would bog down on simple movie playing, including mpg, asf, divx, avi, blah blah
