NV sold chopped GA103s as 3060ti's so not really.
It's mostly about salvaging everything, thus getting product-level yield up.
Yeah, so AMD is salvaging enough extra dies with 4 CUs here? lol
It's just basic SKU spam.
Weird, it looks like drop-in replacement for a product so bad it couldn't meet N21 and has been AWOL for months.

Looks like the GRE isn't just Chinese brands but established AMD AIBs. Guessing we'll see a US launch before too long.

Already advertising one with a prebuilt in Germany:

It's just a dud dump. The N21 replacement would either be N32... or maybe nothing.

It's reasonable to expect that the N21 replacement is N31.

N32 is going to be the N22 replacement.

Plus GRE model already has too much scale for dump of parts that don't make it. 5600X3D is what a true dumping of failed parts looks like. Super small scale. One retailer in one country.

It's just China and maybe a couple small time OEMs.

"Just China" , and OEMs potentially world wide.

Compared to Just one retailer, and only locally, not mail order.

Also consider that 5600 X3D is the only salvage of 5800X3d. This is what real salvage part looks like. Hardly enough to count except as a curiosity.

N31 already has 7900 XT for salvage. This new part is not based on salvage, it's just planned segmentation.

N21 had three different CU count segments (80/72/60), so it's not like it's without precedent, and NVidia often has 3 or more segment from a single chip.

IMO there will be DIY retail segment of N31, below 7900 XT with 16 GB, available everywhere eventually, whether its the GRE or some other variant.

Unless, as I said before, N32 has been reworked and turns in surprising above expectations performance.

But there's no point given that there's much less need to salvage because of the smaller die.

The variations you see are almost always more about market segmentation, not salvage.

They didn't need a RX 6800 (non XT) for salvage (XT would suffice). They needed it for market segmentation

Go back one more generation, and tiny ~250mm2/40CU Navi 10 was segmented into three (40 CU/36 CU/32 CU) for 5700 XT/5700/5600.

Or go look at NVidia GA102 with 5 different CUDA counts, for market segmentation...

It's marketing, not salvage.

AMD is trying to cover with 3 parts (N31,"N32",N33) a market NV is covering with 5 parts (102/103/104/106/107).

Unsurprising AMD would artificially segment their parts more than NV would, they're just working with less.

I guess the real kick in the balls here is the general thought was N32 was going to cover this performance segment all the way down to N33 and AMD was just waiting for N21 to runnout. The GRE's existence puts a stopper on that idea.

Look forward to seeing the GRE put through a trusted site's review ringer though. Another fun part to really highlight the arch differences between N21 and N31.

RDNA3 just sucks, I can see why AMD is no in rush to launch more product when silicon is so expensive. They can keep selling RDNA2 for lower range products. N21 probably costs less for them to build than N32 at this point. Cost of 5nm is much more than cost of 7nm, add on top the added cost of packaging.

I noticed my local Micro Center has really low stock of 7900XT cards. They only have a hand full of overpriced OC cards. I checked the inventory in the other stores and this seems to be a bit of trend. It's not exactly universal but the stores that do have ample stock only have a small selection of models.

I'm starting to wonder if they have moved away from 7900XT production and plan release the 7900 GRE to the wider market soon. Hopefully renamed 7800XT.

Maybe they read the suggestion I posted in the thread 3 months ago
If they want to make a $600-$650 7800 xt card they should offer a more cost effective N31 with a 256 bit bus and 16 GB of VRAM. Even if that means they need to phase out the 7900 XT.

ATi made little money even at their best so good that they're dead.
They made some fantastic cards, however.
7900 GRE suggests to me, yet again, that N32 is cancelled or at least a total turd. They release another product in the place where top-bin N32 - if it could clock to 3GHz - would have landed.

80 CU N31 should be 2250MHz to match a 60CU 3GHz N32 and GRE is... 2245MHz. With N32 memory configuration. And using what look like N32 boards too.

So if N32 is coming this year then clocks are likely to be low and slots in well below the 7900 GRE. Although on occasion AMD has been known to introduce totally useless products quickly made obsolete (3800XT comes to mind - 4 months of marginal relevance).
According to AMD we should see new launches of “enthusiast class” cards this quarter. I suspect that means the 7800XT.

N31 refresh with faster memory perhaps? (And a reset of the MSRP)

AMD just keep squeezing the market for the 7800XT, first by reducing the price on the 7900XT & now the 7900 GRE (6950XT in effect) being $649 doesn't leave much room for their middle cards. I don't think the 7800XT will be much faster if at all faster than the 6800XT, <10% improvement.
