Speed of ATHLON XP 1600+

I just finished building my first computer system. I installed a retail AMD Athlon XP Processor in a ASUS A7V133 motherboard. Everything seems to work fine. I never made any changes to the motherboard after I booted up and after I installed Windows XP Pro. My question is how can I tell what speed my CPU is running at. When the Computer boots up it say CPU 1.06 mhz. I know this is a dumb question, but does that mean it running at 1600 or do I need to change some setting in the bios to get the computer to run at the 1600 speed. I am not trying to learn how to overclock. I just want to run for now at the rated speed of the processor (1600) and I am not sure 1.06 means its 1600. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

the xp1600 does not mean it runs at 1600MHz. Just that it is equivalent to a 1600MHz processor

It should be running at 1400MHz. What do you have the FSB set to?

I believe so. I have never used that mobo, but you want the FSB to be set to 133MHz.

The FSB is set to 100 MHZ and the multiplier is set to 10.5. Should I just change it to 133MHz and save the changes and that all I have to do.

I change the CPU to 133 and save the setting. When I rebooted I got the following message. "During the last Boot-Up, your system hung for an improper CPU speed or Dram setting. Your system is in the safe mode . I change the setting back to 100MHz and rebooted and up with the old setting. I notice that the Dram setting was at 133. Is Dram the type of memory. I don't have Dram memory installed but Sram memory. Do you think that might be the problem why it would not let me change it to 133 MHz.

Can you change the multiplier settings to say 14? The way it works is that the processor's speed is determined by the multiplier x FSB.

Right now you are running 10.5 x 100. Now 10.5 x 133 would get you almost 1400, while 14 x 100 would get the 1400.

Are you saying that you are running SDram (168 pin PC133)?

Yes, that is correct. I installed 256MB, 168 pin DIMM memory. I brought it from Crucial.com, so I thought it was the correct memory for the ASUS A7V133 board. I will try your suggestion now. Thanks

i find that odd that it wont run properly at 133MHz. ive got my xp1800+ running at 133 with out a problem.

Thanks for all your help. I giving up for tonight but will start again tomorrow night. A dumb newbie question. What does FSB stand for. I want to make sure I am changing the correct setting. I have been changing the CPU Clock Multiplier and the CPU Frequency number. I hope that the combination of these two items means the FSB setting.

Your Athlon 1600+ is rated at 1400MHz which by default is a multiplier of 10.5 and FSB of 133. Make sure these are the BIOS settings you have. By running it at 10.5 and FSB of 100 you are underclocking your cpu (10.5 X 100 = 1050 or the 1.06 GHz you're getting). Also make sure you have the latest BIOS update for your motherboard. One more thing...make sure your RAM is PC133 and that you didn't get PC100 by mistake (although the Crucial PC100 should run at 133).

Hmm, as far as I remember there is a jumper on the mobo that you should set to 133Mhz fsb instead of 100, look in the manual for the mobo. Not sure though, it's six months since I had that mobo myself (and that was only for two weeks, it now resides in a friends machine, I only had it for testing).

Check the motherboard manual and make sure any jumpers that you board has is set correctly. If it has a jumper for FSB make sure it is set to 133, if you have one for multiplier make sure it is set to default. Then go into the BIOS and make sure your settings match as well. Then try to boot. That should do it. If you are still having issues you may have a bad board. I will try to search for an online manual for your board to see exactly what could be the issue.

I think what he is saying is that he has a board that will take SDRAM and DDR...if he has the SDRAM will he be able to get a FSB of 133, or would he be getting into overclocking? I just read one of his earlier posts and I drew my conclusion from there. I may be wrong as I am not familiar with his board...

His board only takes SDRAM. Here are the stats:

An update to the latest BIOS will probably solve your problems.

I just downloaded the manual. The board is an SDram board only. Looks like your problem is in the dip switches. You have 2 sets. They are right between where the ram gets seated and where the IDE channels are. You can use jumper free mode (bypass jumpers and set via software) or use jumper mode (jumpers dictate the system.) If you want to use jumper free mode make sure that BOTH dip switches are in the OFF position. Now one dip switch has 5 switches. That is for running at 100-133MHZ FSB. The other has 6 for the CPU multiplier. Either set those all to off and set up in the BIOS, or set the dip switches correctly. They are in your manual under Hardware setup. Let me know if you have any other questions. Like I said I downloaded the manual and have it right here with me. Good luck!

Make sure all the dipswitches are set to JumperFree Mode so that all the changes can be made in BIOS, and then it should be able to be set at 10.5X for CPU clock multiplier and 133 MHz CPU Frequency and 133 MHz DRAM Frequency without a problem. Not sure why you are experiencing problems with these settings unless your CPU is not really an Athlon XP 1600+.

New Asus boards with jumpers usually ship in jumper free mode from my experience. Definately something to check, however. My money is still on a BIOS update for XP/MP support.
