will downloading other peoples worlds be free?

Considering the money that must have gone into coding that, I bet you'll have to pay for it. If they kept it reasonable, I don't see that as being that much of a problem. Just have a way of rating people's world's/galaxies and $5 for a whole lot of content (free for the developers) wouldn't be that onerous.

I suddenly want to play a modern video game when it comes out... I haven't been this excited since KOTOR II.

If it's player content I bet it's free. You can already download other people's stuff for Simcity (another Will Wright game) and this is very similar. Besides it'd really suck if they did charge, because that'd almost be like selling your own work back to you.

agreed, and what if someone's galaxy just attacked you, like in the video, and you just ended up blowing the planet up, that's a hell of a waste of $5

I don't know if I would pay for someone else's galaxy, if it was mmo style where they'd be playing too, then maybe, but not just to download, I don't know...

The wikipedia page says that other players' content will be added automatically. I could see a $15 per month charge be required, as it uploads from the net the content as a central part of the game.
Scroll down the page for some more references.

Awesome!

This is slick (from gamespy):

Whenever you create something, assuming you're connected to the 'net, it'll be uploaded for the world to enjoy. But it doesn't just disappear. You'll be able to track how your creations are faring around the universe. You'll get regular "Multiverse Reports" that tell you how many people met your species and how they reacted. Is everyone killing your creatures on sight? Are they using the different buildings you've created? You'll get to see!

I wonder if it'll be possible to see who's designed the most dangerous race.

From what I can tell it is coming this fall? I'll keep an eye out for it.

I have doubts that they will be able to allow the level of creativity they seem to be promising. If you don't have much freedom to be creative, or if your creativity doesn't change the experience at all, it could be a disappointment. So I hope they can pull it off. I mean I hope it doesn't turn into Black & White, where it just isn't that much fun. Because it's a really cool, new idea.

Holy shiat. I can't even imagine the amount of coding that would have to go into something like that.

The hardest part really is knowing how a creature operates given it's bone and flesh structure. Everything else is easy. In fact, I don't see why he can't take it a step further and pursue multiple galaxies. If it's all player-driven content, then there should be plenty of room. EVE has 5000+ solar systems, and that's developer-made content.

the creature itself is easy, changing shapes, adding bones, its done in 3dapps

the hard part is getting all the movements, getting a walkcycle has been done before in animation packages, but the rest... pretty damn impressive

Isn't that what I just said?

Last I heard, it was supposed to be coming out this fall. Then again, I haven't heard any news about the game for 6 months and their webpage hasn't chaged at all. Maybe they will have a big set up at E3 this year. Anyway, the game looks great. I've been looking forward to it for many months.

I love how the game doesn't use animations, it just uses small files, and the code of the bone structure and muscles, etc, determines how the creatures move. That should keep downloads from the master server pretty small.

I hope I'm not horribly disappointed like I was with Fable.

Reminds me of the nes or snes game like this where you evolve to get upgrades and such.

But yea this game looks so uber...

How can you go wrong when you have porno music playing when you are mating a tripod with a sucker instead of a tail?

After watching this I think I saw this somewhere but it still looks good.

My favorite parts besides the mating music was:

"Peaceful cowards"

And the part where he goes "we also have defensive tools as well" as he blows the planet up...

Well, how big of a video file would it be if it were to be compressed as ... say, H.264 format ? Or MPEG-2 ? I mean ... it's what, 35 minutes long ?

They might not have unlimited space to host stuff. I do not know however how big the file actually is, under that "Flash" format, if I can say.

I had heard good things about the game, but I didn't watch the video until yesterday. I must say that I am EXTREMELY excited for this game. I've never really played a game of the like, and thinking about it gives me shivers

Seems pretty interesting. It might be a game my wife would actually play and if so then I would totally pick it up.
