sql manager issue

Hello,

I've been trying to figure out this issue I've been having connecting to an outside sql server. I've tried several clients and still the same issue. What it seems like is sql enterprise manager, or even ems sql manager only lets you connect to localhost sql servers or servers on a localarea network but not outside servers such as blahblah.blahblah.com . I've never had to really mess with these clients before but since this server is running ms sql server / coldfusion this is probably one of the best ways I can do what I have to do as far as managing the database. Any help would be appreciated - Thank you! -

wouldn't you need to vpn onto that network first, before SQL Enterprise manager would let you connect to that database?

It's been a while since I've dealt with SQL Manager, but when I had an issue connecting to an outside server, I had to disable my Firewall in order to finally get access. Of course, this assumes that you have access to the servers in the first place.

The two previous posters are correct. You'd first have to establish a VPN if you aren't on the LAN and you would need access (if on a domain, using Windows authetincation to access the SQL servers if configured so) to the SQL servers.

I'm not sure of all of the port requirements for SQL Manager but you need at least access to port 1433 which is the MS SQL port, if it uses any RPC then you'll also need the SMB/CIFS ports opened which is very unlikely to happen on the Internet.
