SSD FOR BACKING UP VIDEOS

I have a library of instructional videos that I want to back up to an SSD.
My feeling is an SSD would be less likely to fail compared to an HDD. I've had several HDD's fail over the course of the last 20 years.
I want to reduce the risk of losing the library.
Since the price of SSD's continues to drop I think it is now time to consider using a SSD.
For my purposes I am assuming read/write speed is not an issue as this is to be a backup to the library. Currently it consumes about 700 gb.
I am looking for best price and reliability.
Are my assumptions right? Please advise.

Thanks,
Justin

I have a feeling your feeling is wrong. SSD data will degrade just from disuse, although sticking it in the refrigerator might help.

For storage reliability, there's RAID, there's tape backups, and there's optical disc backups.

Thanks for the reply.
My assumption was, since there are no moving parts less chance of breakdown.

I think you'd be better off buying two, or three, 1TB HDDs, or whatever you can get for the same price as a 1TB SSD. Redundancy is going to be more reliable than only having one SSD backup.

There was an article on this site a year or so ago about data retention in SSDs left without power. At least with MLC drives, it doesn't seem to be something to worry about.

The summary of the article state: "it's not cost efficient to use them for cold storage anyway, so if you're looking to archive data I would recommend going with hard drives for cost reasons alone."

Is a WD Passport 1TB a good choice or would a 3.5 in. be more appropriate?

Too bad that just isn't the case.
SSDs are not meant for long term storage without power.
They do weird things depending on which brand, like bitrot, locks up the device and so on.

You need to have multiple backups of the videos to be sure you will be safe.
You might also want to consider adding cloud storage as well.

I do not like ANY external drive that has encryption hardwired via the controller.
This means, that if the enclosure fails, you can kiss your data goodbye.

Was I the only one that thought this thread was about how to use an SSD to store the videos from a car's backup camera?

Existing library of videos already on HDD, nothing to do with a car's backup camera.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Probably use the 1TB WD Passport that I have now for the backup.

I keep an extra copy of my home videos on Google Drive in the cloud (in addition to physical DVDs and a HDD). I have less than a TB, as you do, so it's free storage. The upload will take some time if you have a slow connection, though.
